• For any fans of the war film genre, Wolfgang Petersen’s 1982 film DAS BOOT was just digitally remastered for Blu-ray. I now own both the original and the new director’s cut. If you own, the original, I still recommend looking into it. If you own neither or haven’t seen it, do yourself a favor and watch the film. You won’t be disappointed. LA Times has called it “the most convincing war movie ever made.”

I suspect there’s at least a handful of fellow fans in here, but just in case you’re not familiar with the film, here’s a brief description:

Set in 1942 during World War Two’s Battle of the Atlantic, German subs are engaging English shipping vessels in hopes to dwindle the supplies & support. The Germans are severely outmatched by the English’s more advanced escorts, proving victory to be a difficult task. DAS BOOT focuses on the actions of one such U-Boat, but also delves deeper into the sociological and psychological implications of the U-Boat’s environment. This multi dimensional aspect of the film, coupled with the intensity of being confined to a submarine, is what makes it so remarkably intense and interesting. If you’re a fan of war films, or you consider yourself a film buff, Das Boot is a must-see. I mean, it hasn’t receive 6 Oscar nominations and decades of acclaim for no reason at all! ; )

*And fyi, the Blu-ray extras are incredible. Bonus features include:

    -  full commentary with Wolfgang Peters
    -  extensive documentary footage from filming in 1981
    -  overviews of the control and captain’s room, and then some.

There have been at least three different versions of the film released on video: the 149 minute version (which I think was the theatrical release), the 209 min Director’s cut, and the 293 min uncut version (which corresponds to the TV mini-series originally shown in Germany). I’ve seen all three versions, and I have the 293-minute one on DVD; definintely a great movie, and the full-length mini-series version is the one I like best.

I didn’t know about that 293 mn version!
now i know what i’m going to do this week-end…

  • I don’t usually like to see movies with subtitles, but when I first saw this movie, I was totally blown away. I totally forgot I was reading subtitles - it was that good. I saw it later with English dubbing and it didn’t have the same impact. I am not particularly a fan of war movies, but this is one of the best movies I have ever seen. Thanks, mastercharles, for reminding me of it. I bet the blu-ray version is incredible. Does it include both the German and English audio, and the English subs? TIA

  • If you liked “Das Boot” you should really watch “Die Brücke” (h t t p://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Die_Br%C3%BCcke_(film)). Critics say, that it’s one of the hardest, most bitter anti-war films ever shown in cinemas.

A german war movie which is even more famous than “Das Boot” here in Germany. It is well known for it’s realistic representations.
The film won its director Wicki international attention, which resulted in his participation in co-directing the movie The Longest Day.
“Die Brücke” is one of the most decorated German films of the postwar period. It shows with an impressive dramatic and highly emotional images, as youth growing up with a misguided idealism in Nazi-Deutschland, and brought up to a hero’s delusion, that it consistently leads in the politically abused “death for the Vaterland”.

Thank you for recommending this. By pure chance, I stumbled upon a broadcast of “Die Brücke” on ARD last night and though the film had already started, saw most of it. Very impressive indeed.

  • Das Boot is an all-time classic which I use in my classes to show the students the effect of water pressure.

Did you watched it allready?…how was the 293 min. drive?? :-)

  • Love Das Boot. My wife lent mine out. Am dying to rewatch it. I love the scene with the Captain on the bridge and the theme tune playing. Sends a shiver through me!
My ring tone is the theme tune. Often do not answer the phone just to listen to it.

  • I hope that I can make it one time to Laboe to visit the Submarine they still have from WWII in North Germany.
I had the option once to go there but thought I would need more time to see just everything on and in it.
    To me it´s a must!…
