I got these for my Middle East Neutrals

@Young:
Does anyone else here think that magnets on carriers and air units are difficut to play with, and a waste of time to make?
Are you implying that that is what you think?
Yes, I’ve seen them, played with them, and believe they are the most unnecessary customization ever.
Haven’t played with them. The idea sounds pretty good, but the application could (in my experience with magnetics) become a bit tricky to manage.
How strong are the magnets? If the strength of the magnets is very weak (force only strong enough to keep a plane on the carrier but without resistance when picking it off) it could be good.
I voted middle ground as I have not seen or used them, the idea is promising.
I was planning on magnetizing my carriers and planes but I play on a magnetically receptive game board (huge piece of sheet metal) and I have a feeling the neodymium magnets on the carriers and planes may end up keeping the union locked onto the game board. lol
I’ll have to test a prototype someday….
Interesting idea. I know it does bother me at times when the fighters keep falling off the carriers. I guess if the project isn’t too time consuming or expensive, I might consider looking into it.
I am planning on doing this for my set.
I want to know where to buy the metal rods and how to cut them so the magnet lays flat. Then i want to know where to buy the metal stands and how to drill a hole in the metal so the rod stands up.
Anybody have links for these items?
Somewhere in the customizations section a guy made a whole tutorial, with downloadable PDF’s.

…it seems, I’m not the only one wondering…
I am combining the resources for making these bases.
This site has the proper magnets. Still looking for metal rods that are pre-cut about 2 inches.
A friend of mine has the most perfect examples. Here is what he did ( reprinted from email).
I bought the magnets from K&J Magnetics… They were almost the smallest available size with a hole in the center to fit a 1/16" rod.
I drilled holes in pennies, glued 1/16 inch brass rod into them, placed the magnet on top and glued it down.

I used flat 1mm sheet magnet for my carriers, my stands are just furniture buttons with nails. The planes, i drilled small holes underneath and glued 2mm x1mm magnets in. Time consuming if you wanted to do the whole airforce but ok if you only want to do a few for each country.
I found it.

This link has everything you need. I will be using the black 30 mm stand with peg and micro magnets from the above link.
I think for global 40 sets will suffice, possibly 50. Need micro magnets for all the planes ( about 80-90) and 40 for the stands.
You guys might want to check these sites out. Or just scroll up above this post.
