    • When the USA deliberately BOMBED itself - March 21st 1944

      During the dead of winter, March 21st 1944; Miles City, Montana; local residents woke to their quaint little town being overrun and submerged by the rising frozen waters of the Yellowstone river. Ice jams were building quickly, raising the subzero river water levels over 16 feet. As the blocks of ice, slush and freezing waters flooded into the city, residents were forced to flee their homes for safer grounds.

      Miles City Mayor L.S. Keye knew immediate action must be taken, and brought in explosive experts from a nearby town. Two local pilots took a small aircraft over the river and attempted to drop and detonate 50 pound homemade bombs on the Yellowstone ice jam , but unfortunately it had little effect.

      Mayor L.S. Keye then decided to do the unthinkable, and placed an urgent request to the Governor’s office. His request was short, and to the point “Send in the Bombers!”

      At a USAAF base in Rapid City S.D., the crew of an Army Air Force B-17 were quick to accept the unusual mission, and preparations to bomb an American city were fast underway. The crew hastily began fusing and loading 250-pound bombs into the bomb bay of their USAAF Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress. Shortly thereafter, the loaded bomber with her crew of eight, took to the skies in a harsh blizzard and low ceilings.

      The plan was to deliver the bombs to Miles City where the load would be transferred to a waiting Dive-Bomber to execute the bomb delivery. As the lone B-17 was nearing Miles City, low clouds forced the plans to be changed. Under a blanket of 1000 foot overcast skies, the B-17 was then ordered to handle the bombing run themselves.

      Originally planned to release the load at 10,000 feet, the low overcast forced the bomber crew to take their ship lower. At 1930 hours, in heavy snow, winds and cold, the bomber appeared over the river and executed two dummy bombing runs as crowds of locals watched in amazement. On the third pass, the B-17 released a test bomb that exploded precisely on target. Unsure of the effect, the crew brought their bomber around again.

      Making a two more passes, releasing all six of the 250 lb. bombs. Hundreds of residents watched motionless, and none speaking a word. The entire town, their homes and their families future hung in the balance as they watched the bombs fall. Seconds later a huge plume of ice, mud and water exploded skyward from the frozen Yellowstone river.

      The ice jam quickly broke apart, and the frozen waters slowly receded, saving the small town. The next morning, local residents were thrilled to watch as the water levels had dropped a full 10 feet from the day before.

      That night the crew of the B-17 were welcomed by the thankful and relieved residents of Miles City Montana. The entire crew were put up at the local hotel, and each received a well-deserved steak dinner.

      The next morning, the crew departed, and the B-17 made a final victory pass low over the town at 50 feet over the rooftops, rocking their wings as they flew back home to Rapid City SD… and so the story goes of the only time the continental United States was bombed.

      Axis Dominion is a fantastic Axis and Allies player.

      But he played the league POORLY. Que India Jones and the holy grail scene.

      What a failure! (rubs it in with glee - this might sting a little… or a lot)

      That is where he lacked the -skill- to make a good decision. Selecting his opponent. 0% luck was invovled in that bad, horrible read, and look at him now! blaming dice!

      I encourage you all to have NO sympathies for any man who was clearly, and caculatingly preying on the weak, and the deseperate. No sympathies for a man who was looking for low homework and easy wins… but who took his eye off the ball and VWHAP. Allowed a circumstance to exist where a Toddler with a gun got him.

      The more I think about it, luck was not involved. And more Skill was involved in having the balls to roll for moscow, and well as seduce a power player into a false sense of security, in order to extract a 30% chance at their failure.

      AD being a power player, -never should have allowed a circumstance- to exist on the board as it did, where his opponent could pop him in the jaw in such a way.

      That has nothign to do with luck folks, and no one ever loses due to “dice”.

      Yes. This is how it is.

      yes, the axis benefitted by -some- luck factor, but in a certain context it doesnt actually seem that crazy? ?? $138 loss seems more a reflection of the defense composition (expensive units?) than any other factor.

      Painful, agreed. but when you factor how both sides were over par for hits, he only got 8 more hits on 150 dice total dice than the opponent, spread over 5 rounds of total combat.

      it seems plausibly in the realm of expectability.

      Am I missing something??

      Now for the most PAINFUL part, learning how to Play By Forum.
      We’ll start with playing a game someone else has already started for you


      1. Breathe in, Breathe out, You can do this.

      2. UNDERSTAND that once someone has setup a forum thread and a game is started, that all the information you need is READY, and that doing this is easy

      3. To Play a game that is already started… go to the thread it’s started in. FOR EXAMPLE Click the link to a game of mine below

      4. scroll down to the THIRD post, you will see at the bottom a link that reads triplea_27051.0_G1.tsvg Click on that file!

      5. Once you’ve clicked on the file, it will ask you to save it to your computer do this,

      • Save it anywhere you want, but the DEFAULT folder tripleA loads games from is c:\users\yourname\triplea\savedgames, If you get lost here, just take your time, try saving the file to your desktop if it makes your life easer.

      6. Start up TripleA

      7. Click LOAD SAVED GAME
      -Find the game you just downloaded, and click open

      8. Click Start PBEM (Play-By-Email/Forum) Game

      9. Where it says PLAY BY FORUM, there is a box beside Post To Forum: Click the box and select AA.org in the list

      10. Type in your username, and your password

      11. Click PLAY, and go through your turn

      12. at the end of your turn, click POST TURN SUMMARY

      IF you have to stop at ANY point in the game, for ANY reason, you can always SAVE IT FOR LATER


      Now - how to start a NEW Play By Forum game


      Basically, what you do is very similar to what you did before.

      1. start triplea

      2. choose the game you want to play

      3. click play by forum

      4. enter the email addresses of every player who will be part of the game (Yes you will have to ask people for their emails)

      5. start a thread on the forum, in the Play Boardgames Section and Title it accordingly “you vs whoever”

      6. Get the Game ID # Look at the top of the screen and find the URL for the thread, as if you were going to copy paste the link to the thread to your buddy, (For example look at the previous thread link we just used to go the Gargantua PWNS all game)

      Those last few digits,= 27051.0 is the game ID Number

      Copy it, or Write it down.

      7. Enter that number, in this case 27051.0 into the the game ID, section.

      8. in the play by forum box select AxisandAllies.org from the drop down menu

      9. Enter in your username and password again.

      10. Then click Play. and play the game.

      Zhukov also has instructions, available, and if you get to much spam from the dice server, because you are playing so many games, just go into your email, and direct all emails coming from MARTI the dice server, to go to a seperate folder.

      You can play online, and it will help you get an understanding of how things works.

      It can take awhile to complete games, but some prefer it because it’s as simple as one or two moves a day.
