I tried doing the math by hand but I’m very bad with statistics, can someone who is good with statistics proof this strategy? Say you have even odds in a fight your thinking of taking, you win ~50% and you lose ~same IPC overall as opponent. Should you take the fight because attacker can choose to stay or flea vs defense doesn’t? If there are 2 scenarios A) the dice of first round go in your favor or B) the dice go against you and you now have sub 50% and bad IPC then couldn’t you just retreat if B happens and push if A happens? The computer calculating expected losses is doing so under the impression that you stay regardless of outcome so it’s the sum of all negative outcomes + sum of all positives. But if you leave when it goes against you you reduce the sum of negative outcomes partially while I believe reducing the sum of all positive outcomes by less. So you can achieve positive trades from equal fights by having the ability to choose if your going for their full stack or not.

I was curious if there is a way to set up the 1942 board for 1940 (or even 1941)? I searched online, but couldn’t find anything.

Make one, just research it and make sure its balanced and gives players options. For example make sure nobody loses a critical unit to start the game.

And if they wants to play 1942 with a 1940 start date, but don’t have the skills and knowledge to make one for themselves, what the heck are they supposed to do? Telling a person with a broken car that they should just fix it themselves doesn’t help a non-mechanic any.
That said, I do know about the work someone else put into making a variant for 1942, Second Edition, that starts in 1939. I have no idea if it’s balanced or not but I rather think it’s not. I say this because this variant creator is more inclined for historical accuracy than play balance. I hope this helps. If you find it unbalanced, I would first try giving the weaker side to the stronger player. Handicapping, a la having faster runners were weighted shoes in a race.

With this setup, Japan starts with 11. China starts with 8, and France (1939, remember) starts with 13, which includes 2 for Indo-China. Japan is expected to prey on China and France to build up.
While this might feel anemic for those used to 1940, it just might be roughly accurate in the combined circumstances of the reduced total income of 1942 and an earlier starting date reducing the incomes of both Germany and Japan.
The opportunity to repeat Germany and Japan’s wild successes in 1940 and 1941 is there, can you seize it?

You should make one, I don’t have a 1940 copy but have friends who do and would love to have one. Still I always like to put in a Bismark no matter what time period, just to stress Britian because they have vast, if thin superiority in the Atlantic ocan.
