Japan Unveils Largest Warship Since WWII

  • Another incomprehensible posting from IL.  Jesus man, use antecedents before you use pronouns…

    Clearly sarcasm goes over simpletons head…

    @rjpeters70:

    Also, I like how I’m the simpleton because you failed to use antecedents.  Nice.

    Epic WIN.

  • I count four pronouns, only two of which have clear antecdents.  What are the antecedents for the “you” in the second sentence and the “you” in the fourth sentence?

    It appears that I bother you and this makes me happy to no end.  :-D

    2. The Priggish Grammar Troll

    No matter what the discussion is about, the Priggish Grammar Troll will ignore the argument and pick on the one word you used incorrectly, like alot or misuses of they re, their and there.

    Yes EPIC WIN INDEED..

    Here is the parade to prove it…

    I can personally recall at least 30 different occasions, that you grammar nazi’d people IL.

    So I’m not really sure where you’re going with this?

    The ship is a destroyer.

    This must be 3001?

    The ship is only a ‘Destroyer’ insofar as the Graf Spee was a 10,000 ton cruiser allowed by the Treaty of Versailles. The Japanese can use any name they want, but the truth is that is a carrier can be used for offensive military operations and is not “defensive” by the requirement of their constitution after 1945.

    Nations often use language in a manner that sweeps away their past.

    820 foot Destroyers do not exist. The Yamato was about 863 feet.

    I call it as i see it. Carrier or CV. Not AC

    Um… ok.

    They re should be they’re.

  • For whatever reason, those black diamonds show up and had to be edited out.

  • Well, there is only one way to settle this…I’ll just walk right over there and ask them.  Good thing the Chu-hi stand is on the way!

    By the way, it is unholy for the sun to rise at 430am…haven’t these people heard of daylight savings?

  • Good, I say let the sun rise again over the Sea of Japan.

  • Just posting here because ripdiapers70 thinks i “bailed” from this thread. Rather nothing noteworthy has been posted since my last post.

  • It’s good to see the Japanese Armed Forces showing some strength. A country should have the ability to defend itself without relying on Allies.

    Why do you think Iran is so busy trying to get itself a Nuke?

    Because as soon as they have one, they’re off limits.  Just like those North Koreans…

    Except, we view that thought process as a crime for some reason.

  • They are off limits only in the sense that they turn into another Korea, which is isolated from the global economy. That is a fate worse than what they had before.

  • Customizer

    This topic is cool but not really shocking. Most modern navies have at least some type of vessel you would call a carrier. Not just a destroyer, frigate or cruiser with a helipad.

    I can’t remember the name or class but even the French at some point in modern history had an aircraft carrier that could operate fixed-wing traditional aircraft. It was no Nimitz, but it wasn’t just a helo or Harrier carrying ship. With the advance in aircraft design and changing face of war, it’s not impossible to imagine a small carrier possibly a drone carrier, coming onto the scene.

  • Liaison TripleA '11 '10

    @rjpeters70:

    The French have the De Gaulle.  Still in operation, but plagued by significant operational problems.  They fly Rafael’s from it and some helos.

    This Japanese LHD (or destroyer, if that’s what the want to call it) should be excellent not only for ASW, but also for seizing and defending offshore assets.

    And for killing North Koreans and Chinamen.

    Am I right?

  • '17 '16 '13 '12

    @Imperious:

    This is not a destroyer.

    Good looking ship. Considering the potential for this ship to host F-35Bs (unclear if it can right now, but it has the potential), this is a light aircraft carrier.

  • '17 '16 '13 '12

    @rjpeters70:

    Like I said, if the Marines at Pax River can get the SVOTL worked out, and if we sell F-35s to Japan, and if they decide to base them on the new destroyer, then yes, it can project fixed wing aircraft.  And yes, it is the size of the de Gaulle, a pretty dated carrier.  But it’s not a supercarrier, it is much more like an LHD–which itself is supposed to carry SVOTL F-35s attached to a MAGTF according to the JOAC.

    I thought that the De Gaulle was in the 40,000 tons range with 40 aircraft and a steam catapult, which would be a medium size fleet carrier (and only nuclear steam catapult carrier outside of the US). The new Japanese ship could carry maybe a dozen SVOTL, which is a far smaller capability.

    What Japan needs is a galaxy class federation starship.

  • Or a  Kamikaze training program.
    You would sign up Garg  and if they will have me with my bad eyesight, I will join you.
    Oh and my poor hearing, bad back….
    Let’s face it, we all want a strong Japan again.

  • China will eventually try to take Formosa back, which will trigger a regional war. Japan needs her Akagi back to counter China’s floating “casino carrier” they bought from Russia.

    I bet Japan has laid down a few more construction projects for more 840 foot “destroyers”
