Today in History….Stanislav Petrov: The man who may have saved the world

Today marks the 100th anniversary of the event that is commonly held to be the end of World War I: the armistice on the Western Front. Germany’s war effort was on the verge of collapse both militarily and domestically, and its allies had already signed separate armistice agreements during the preceding months. The signing took place early in the morning, the ceasefire went into effect at 11 AM.

Formally speaking, the notion that World War I ended with this armistice is incorrect. Hostilities had ended, but unlike the end of World War II, the armistice did not constitute a formal capitulation. So legally speaking, the war continued until the various parties involved had reached separate peace agreements, a process which took several years to complete – in the case of Germany, the Versailles treaty which was signed in 1919 and took effect on January 10, 1920. And the state of war with Turkey even continued until the 1923 treaty of Lausanne.

----Along the same lines, longest bombing mission, I believe the current title holder would be the B-52 bombers that took of from Barksdale AFB, Bossier City, La (NW La.) and flew to Afghanistan to “kick-off” that conflict. I might be remembering their destination incorrectly, but I’m TIRED.

you have reversed the situation falk. i dont complain about your usage of “USan”. you complain about others’ usage of “american” as referring to “those of US nationality”, and i argued with you that “american” is the accepted term, and “USan” was merely your term. i didnt complain about you using it however. use it as much as you like.

..In fact they were banned in 1921 after Lenins' Bolsheviks seized power in 1918\. Your "menshevik" thing was way back in History long before Lenin. ... Thats exactly why the brilliant Germans saw this opportunity to push the allready problematic Tsarist regime.

menshevik party started around 1900 pushing some reforms , while many of its members became dissatisfied with some of the ideas and broke off to form their own party called the Bolsheviks. Eventually these Bolsheviks came to power and banned all the other parties including menshevik party in 1921. My comment was you confused Lenin as a menshevik but he wasnt , he was Bolshevik. That party existed before the Bolsheviks started and got banned after they got into power. Thats your answer.

If Lenin was not released from a Swiss prison, its quite certain the revolution would not have suceeded w/o its charasmatic leader. So thats exactly why the Kaiser allowed it to occur … so he could destroy his enemy from within. Thats a brilliant concept.
