    @Imperious:

Overrated means to me not worth the time of day forcing me to scroll past these commercials on the TV recorder.

Again, these seem more like your preferences, but whatever…

As for a definition of “overrate” then:   “to rate  or appraise too highly; overestimate”

Clearly we are talking about a movie’s merits pertaining to widespread critical or box office response and the resulting worthiness of those figures. To be overrated, a movie must be hyped or otherwise acclaimed in the first place; be that before or after its release.

And also, issuing a judgmental comment on the quality or merit of movies which you have not seen is not what I am looking for. Clearly you have your opinions and preferences for films, I get that. But I am looking for explanations and discussion on why a particular movie, having the qualifier of being popular, critically acclaimed or highly grossing, is not as good as it is generally assumed. We all don’t have to agree on what we like.

Unless I am mistaken, both Hulks 2003 and 2008 received moderate to positive reviews and were profitable for their studios, but that does not necessarily follow that they were overrated. I haven’t exactly seen a lot of people raving about them. This doesn’t mean I would not agree that they are poor films (I have seen neither).

I haven’t seen any of them, or the T.V. Shows/spinoffs, or read the book series.

But I can imagine, that the TWILIGHT series most certainly trumps ANY previously mentioned films as overrated.

Yeah, this is a hard one because most any guy (which is the predominant gender on these forums) will not get why these movies or books are so well liked. Some genres just don’t traditionally cross the gender barrier.

I have seen the first two. I would be perfectly happy never watching them again… though I will say that the first was not as excruciating to watch as I was thinking it would be. Based on the acting, the story, the dysfunctionality of the characters and tacky visuals… I would call the whole series overrated. But I guess most teen girls would say the opposite.

To interject with a less male-biased opinion: my fiance really liked the books and does like the movies (that is why I saw two and will likely see the rest), but she does not feel that the movies were anywhere near as good as the books were. Plus she can realize so much more easily now how messed up all the characters are. So, she might say the movies were overrated. But I will ask later and amend this post with the answer.

I have to disagree with Avatar being -overrated-

It was a movie experience like no other, because of the 3D element, and I enjoyed it, and loved the movie, and every great laugh until the colonel died

The Colonel was such a hero…

  • I would have preferred that Avatar ended with this being played:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HjMUOU4OkaY A great parade would ensue with soldiers marching thru burned out trees and the blue people working at the casino that was just built.

The wrong people won and the wrong message was presented IMO.

  • I watched an hour of the first Harry Potter and couldn’t believe even kids wanted to watch it. Any fantasy movie trying to incorporate theme trying to similar to the Lord of the Rings. Any movie where the space aliens are trying to conquer earth and there is an actor like Dennis Quaid in it.

I remember when both Avatar, and The Hurt Locker we’re winning either golden globes or Oscars, but I thought they should have been competing for the Razi.

  • This is why i hate these type of movies…

It is just the most ridiculous, cheezy crapola that ruins movies and turns a theater into a 2 hour child day care center.

I cringe when i see this type of thing.

  • @Imperious:

    Any movie like Battleship
    Any movie with Jennifer Lopez
    Any movie by Tyler Perry
    etc.

    Totally agree.

  • Avatar WAS overrated, so was the last Batman (and I’m a fan of SF as well as the Batman)

The Matrix is a great movie, a strong movie. The fight in the training programm, dodging bullets, “Mr. Anderson”, etc. are great moments of late 90’s-2000’s cinema.

Of course it’s my opinion. But since it’s the topic, I must say the Matrix 1 is kinda milestone.

  • Yea matrix was very good. That is the form of fantasy i prefer. It was more like Science Fiction which has basis in something factual and realistic.

Oh and here is a better idea for the Avatar end. The march takes place under that huge tree ( which was burned out due to battle). Sort of the Arch De Triumph thing 1940.

  • Twilight in my opinion was not overrated, any man should know before watching the chick-flick series that it was geared for teenage girls and shouldn’t except anything else. I watched it, with my wife, and I survived. However, I had a coworker that took a woman to go see it on a first date, he decided it was cause enough to cancel any further dates.

Now Underworld is a vampire movie series we men can enjoy. Wow, those leather body suits.

Does this include Independence Day, with Will Smith as the analogue? Because I think ID is a great film.

  • @Imperious:

Mmm, i seem to remember U-Turn being okay, though.

But i suppose you mean ‘typical’ Jen Lopez films.

Yeah, that is pretty bad. It looks like he is on the moon. I will say that not all superhero movies are done so poorly…

That is partly what brought about this topic. Though I will have to take a second look.
