@Wittmann Unless I’m mistaken, I don’t believe the Japanese planes from sz37 can legally move to sz33 as they don’t have any guaranteed landing spot.
It doesnt have to be guaranteed, only potentially available. And when the DD off sz6 clears the path, the 2 Carriers from SZ6 can provide 4 landing spots.
“A fighter or tactical bomber can move its full 4 spaces to attack in a sea zone instead of saving movement, but only if a carrier could be there for it to land on by the conclusion of the Mobilize New Units phase.”
If it were as you said, you could never attack using your (needed) ACs. E.g. you move into open sea with carrier and 2 figs against 10 subs. You would be most certain to lose the battle and your carrier and thus the planes. But is legal.
You can assume you win any battle when making moves. So the attack on sz20 (or waa it 22?) was necessary.
Imagine ge would have sent 10 bombers against sz20. Would we argue then?
The rules cannot acount for probability, hence you must assume the best possible outcome.
