surprise attack:  That is usually my argument against making the game realistic, insomuch as it is not fun to play the axis if you know you are going to lose, or are predisposed against winning.

If you ask me, I feel the axis are still a bit over powered.  Not that the allies dont have a good chance to win, but looking at the tournament and the league, I think the Axis still have an advantage over the allies.

It seems, by the anecdotal evidence, that if the Axis charge hard out of the box and keep the allies on their heels, then they win most of the time.  Not so true in technology games, those seem to still be about 50/50.  My opinion on that matter is that the United States, with the INSANE amount of money it collects (routinely over 100 IPC), can afford to get some of the technologies and then the science of the game turns the war around.  I guess that is kind of historical - would the allies have won without the A-bomb?  Hmm, maybe, but by 1945?  But I digress.

Axis have advantage in Alpha 3.9.  No way to stop concerted USSR crush by Axis without losing to Japan.  This advantage is not overwhelming but it’s there.  The USSR is way underpowered.  They need to stick a bunch of infantry out in hinterlands that the USSR can call on.  Central Asia was not a passive wonderland of socialistic goodwill…. where are the garrisons?

Or, bolster Russia and unbuff America/England.

For instance, take a British Destroyer and 2 AA Guns off the board (England and English coastal sea zone) and give Russia a tank in the far east and 3 artillery in Moscow.

So in the online games and tourneys, do the Axis normaly win?

  • '22 '20 '19 '18 '17 '16 '15 '14 '12

The games I’ve played the Axis win probably 65-70% of the time.

  • We’re talking Alpha 3? In Alpha 2, in my experience the Allies win most of the time…

    Alpha 3.9.

Could you provide a brief outline on how that happens?

When I say games I’ve played, I mean games I have been involved with, not won necessarily.

The Axis win two ways I’ve seen:

    1. Germany goes all out against the USSR early on with help from Japan and basically overwhelms them before the Allies can respond. To do this, Germany takes out the British fleet, kills France, etc, maybe builds some subs or a carrier to keep the allies at bay for a time in the Atlantic.  Turn 2 Germany just starts building men, tanks, mech, arts etc.  Move up to the line.  Have Italy attack round 3.  Germany moves in round 4.  Head to Novgorad to get the NO and block the USSR NO in Arch.  Then move south and park in Bry.  Use the Sukr miIC and maybe build one in Nukr to build up.  Keep bringing in arm from Ger.  Should be ready to take USSR easy, even better if this attracts mass allied ftrs to kill, which will take pressure off Japan.

    2. Germany and Italy push hard in atlantic and middle east, with large German fleet build up, 2 carrier strong etc. This will bottle up UK and corner India.  Then invade the USSR slowly.  Hopefully by this time Axis will gain actual IPC advantage over the allies, putting time on their side.  If the allies are not able to break through somewhere, then the game is over.  In these situations usually it involves the Allies putting max pressure in the Atlantic to break into the med to liberate Cairo/threaten Italy.  This allowed the Japanese to take India and Hawaii.

My personal opinion: Axis lose any game where Germany has less than 5 transports in the Baltic/North Seas.  I don’t care which route of victory they are going for: Pacific, Atlantic: Sea Lion or Atlantic: Barbarossa.

As for which side is favored? Before round 5, the Axis. After round 5, the Allies - they just make way too d@mn much money.  Love to see America get kicked in the groin and dropped 7-9 IPC a round to bring them in line with the rest of the world, but Larry’s already said it will never happen. (That would be Larry Harris, the game designer.)

you mean turtling?  So do I… with the USSR.

  • '18 '17 '16 '11 Moderator

Turtling only works if you can support your losses financially.

If the allies are pushing in 50-60 IPC a round of allied planes, then the Axis have already effectively removed at least one power from the game, I would wager no less than 2, since a turtled nation is no longer a threat.

  • As I have not seen a successful Sealion and its consequences for Barbarossa, I have to say Allies are favoured now.

That’s why I am seeing people perfect Barbarossa.  A perfected Barbarossa, given how Larry has handled other perfected Axis strategies, will see further nerfs to Germany/Italy and continued buffs to England.

  • Hi. What is a nerf? I have always gone 100% Barbarossa in earlier, older games and neutralised UK on 1 to buy time. 1940 blinded me and took my eye of the real goal.  I play someone who plays UK so on the edge that he always makes me think I can Sealion. Did make him sweat in our last one. Lucky git!

  • Really? In every Global game i’ve played, OOB through 3.9, its been an allied victory.  Sometimes the axis came close, but america/britian always brought the hammer down too hard and the axis lost.

That’s what our group is faced with.

well, hard to say what’s going on without seeing your games.

I guess the only thing I can say without seeing your boards is that Germany and Italy should be killing everything in sight round 1-3 and Japan should be moving deep into China and the USSR ready to crush everything in sight about round 3-6.

You guys should get on the forum and play some games.  Best way to see what’s up.

    Hi. What is a nerf?

NERF is a toy manufacturer - they specialize in foam balls and foam swords.  To say something has been nerfed is to say that you took something real and made it useless or worthless.
