Help with battleship combat

How does Combat involving 2-hit battleships work? If you have 5 battle ships bombarding 5 infantry, and the infantry get all 5 hits, can you spread the hits out over all 5 of your battleships. If you can do that, couldn’t you just retreat and your battleships get repaired?

Hi Battlefusion,

When you support an amphibious invasion with battleships and/or cruisers, you get to roll extra dice, but you don’t get any extra hit points. The ships can’t be damaged in the land battle, and you can’t take them as casualties. Also, you only get the bonus bombardment dice if you bring along at least one land unit per ship.

To take your example literally, if you attack 5 infantry with 5 battleships, nothing happens.
If instead you attack 5 infantry with 5 battleships and 1 infantry, you get to roll 2 dice: 1 for the infantry, and 1 for 1 BB.
If you attack 5 infantry with 5 battleships and 3 infantry, you get to roll 6 dice: 3 for the infantry, and 3 for 3 BBs.
If you attach 5 infantry with 5 battleships and 12 infantry, you get to roll 17 dice: 12 for the infantry, and 5 for the 5 BBs.

In any/all of those cases, your BBs are perfectly safe, whether you like it or not. The enemy infantry can kill your attacking infantry, but it can’t hurt your battleships.

In a sea battle your example would work. Imagine 5 battleships attacking 5 destroyers. The attacker fails to hit and the defending destroyers score 5 hits.
The attacker can now assign the five hits to just damage all of the five battleships. After that round of combat the attacker may retreat - and the battleships are repaired.
