1st Annual Cellar Gaming TripleA Octathalon – Sign-Up Thread

  • TripleA

Yeah, that sounds good to me as well.

  • '18 '16 '15

Fine with me. I won’t be here from dec 3rd till 12th, so I won’t respond to any questions, just throw me in all the brackets and all will be well ;)

  • '20 '16 '15 '14

Just a few days left to sign up!  I will be starting the first bracket (NWO) on Tuesday, December 15.  So, if you have been lurking now is your chance to join us!  :)

  • '20 '16 '15 '14

(I hate not being able to edit on these boards – this is why moving forward some of the tournament material will be on an editable board)

Actually, the first game to be paired will be World At War – we will go in the same order as the signups are listed.

  • '20 '19 '18 '17 '16

Can I sign up or is it too late?

  • '20 '16 '15 '14

Sure, you can still sign up!  Which games did you want to play, or did you want all eight?  (Lord of the Rings replaced Red Sun Over China btw)

  • '20 '19 '18 '17 '16

Yeah I can do all eight.

The tournament bracket and win post thread has been started:

    http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=37026.0

You will find information on where to find the brackets and so forth there.  Please post all questions and comments regarding the tournament there from now on.  Thanks!

Hey all. So looks like we are getting started and WaW is the first map. Are there any basic guides to WaW as I haven’t played it before. I’ve played most of the official A&A games at this point so does it primarily use revised or v3 rules? Just looking for some basic guidance to make sure I don’t lose the game in round 1 :)

  • '17 '16 '15

    Hi redrum

I haven’t played it either so IDK if this will help much. I’m pretty sure it’s NWO combined with another map so it’s global now.

Well, I’m not sure if any of us are at expert level on WaW yet, but we have had some experience in the tournament that we are finishing up.  Here is a listing of our completed games so far with saves:

    http://cellargaming.com/phpbb/viewforum.php?f=35

Of course, you may be viewing garbage in, garbage out.  :-D

The map with description is found here:

    http://cellargaming.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=163

Of course that’s mainly information from TripleA itself, but there are a few things in red that may better clarify a few things (such as canals).

And, finally, Whack and a few others posted some good things on this page of our 2nd team game that can be found here:

    http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=35621.30

After our tournaments, my next goal for the cellar gaming site is to post strategy articles and suggestions there – for example, I’m going to need one as soon as I finish the NWO postings since I’m very much a newbie there…  8-)

Hey redrum, I reposted my WAW observations in our game thread.

    Thanks for the WaW info.

@DizzKneeLand33 - I think it would be helpful to post any info/guides/games for each map you start up. So something like this for NWO would be useful as well. I know some of the less common maps might not have much but anything is better than nothing. Not sure if you want to use this thread or somewhere else. Hopefully this info can then become a starting point for any guides you are looking to create.

Also, I’m looking to make fixes to the maps that are in this tourney. So need feedback around bugs/issues especially simple things such as missing images or incorrect notes. So far the main thing I noticed is that all the images are missing from the WaW notes. They’ve been posted in the tripleA forum already so these will be added to the next release: http://tripleadev.1671093.n2.nabble.com/WORLD-AT-WAR-tp5862407p7587033.html. Again not sure the best place to track these (might be in the TripleA forum threads and just link them here).

@redrum – Currently the only guides I have come with the game, but we can all work together on that as we play through the tourney I bet.  :)

As far as corrections are concerned, I have posted the map of each game along with the notes to the game here:

    http://cellargaming.com/phpbb/index.php

You can go into the appropriate game and then go into the “map and description” thread.  For example, the Me262 states in the game notes that it moves 4, but it actually moves 5 (tooltip is correct in the odds calc), so this is listed in red as a correction in that forum.  I will try to update this as we go, and I encourage everyone to also post updates there as well for other corrections (however minor).

Another note that is, imho, more major is the one that says that aa guns on transports fire at aircraft in a battle.  This does not happen, from what I have tested.  Again, this is in WaW.

  • TripleA

@DizzKneeLand33 - Oh nice. The notes fixes are definitely helpful and I can look to make those as well.

  • TripleA

@DizzKneeLand33 - Wanted to bring to your attention how multiple canals work in WaW and TRS. So there are a few sea zones in the pacific that have multiple canals between 2 sea zones (island chains). The TripleA engine requires you to own all canals in order to move between the 2 sea zones. The game notes describe just needing to own both territories to cross a canal. I’ve discussed with a few people and apparently the map’s notes are correct in this case (so somewhat vague) and if you own any canal between 2 sea zones you should be able to move between them. I’m planning to eventually fix this in the engine as well (probably won’t be released for a few months though).

So the question is which set of canal rules do you want to tournament to play under? Discussion here: http://tripleadev.1671093.n2.nabble.com/WORLD-AT-WAR-td5862407i260.html

  • '20 '16 '15 '14

The notes clearly state “play them as they work” so we will be playing that you must own all points to pass through the canal.  Any player who has downloaded TripleA on his/her own (a non-developer) would play the same way, since there is nothing to indicate otherwise.

Besides, we have played a lot of games that way now, and it really does work for the Pacific.  I think the Pacific is a much better battle scene (in WaW) as a result.  I’m not sure what the balance change of the game would be, and I don’t know how this would affect TRS one way or the other.

  • If there’s still room available I’d play 270 BC

  • '20 '16 '15 '14

Sure Santa, I’ll get you on that list!  The pairings for 270BC will be set on Sat 12/19 (just a heads up).

  • Hi:  I would like to sign up for the World at War tourney if it is not too late.

    Thanks,
