I am finishing a game now with pure luck in which I lost at least four battles where there was a 98% chance of taking the territory and 1 battle where there was a 98% chance of taking the territory. That was not fun, and my previous experiences where not as bad but bad all the same. Nor would I  want to win simply because I was lucky. But everyone has their own cup of tea.

You are correct to imply that really quirky things can happen with a small number of rolls.
The 88% chance was a massive battle. The others were of modest size 5 to 12 rolls. One example was a 4, a 3, two 2s and 1 did not get a hit for the first two rounds, and only 1 on the third round.

The maxim is that war is 50% strategy and 50% luck, but Marti seems to have a penchant for the exotic outcome and seems like a real fan of the underdog. :)
