I can remember thinking that I could probably put the fighter which started in India on the CVs with the extra hit soak from the 2 bombers but decided I didn’t need to do an edit for it because I didn’t think you’d attack. Ah well.

An extra fighter would have probably been enough. After I lost 3 US subs, I should have kept more US fighters in range of sz42.

Bummer. I also think I should have kept 2 CVs undamaged. Would have made it negative for ANZAC to attack. 20/20 hindsight.

That’s true but you have to think about what will give you the best path to victory. For me, that was keeping a fleet which couldn’t be attacked by ANZAC because its planes had been knocked off their carriers. Or at least one which could trade evenly in such an attack. Very much preferably better than evenly actually.
I’m inclined to think that the game would have been over if that battle had have gone significantly against me. So I had to assume that wouldn’t happen.
Or am I missing something here?

I believe allowing this attack killed the winning chances of the Axis. At the given point, the game is strategically more or less lost for the Axis.
It is just not a good idea to expose the Japanese fleet to an 1/2 attack at decent odds. USA was at 31% already which makes annihilation almost inevitable and, in good outcomes, even more Japanese planes would have died.
Japanese air force was crippled already, so Japan can absolutely NOT allow to trade more planes. Otherwise, she cannot deal with all 3, Chinese, Brits and reinforcing Allied ships in the Pacific.
This is the case now in this game. Sooner or later Japane can’t cope against the pressure from 3 angles.Without a fleet, Japan is not threatening VC victory which would be vital to keep the game balanced. With the Germans so far behind schedule, I do not see any winning path for the Axis.
In general, with a decent Anzac follow up, I strictly keep the odds for the US on the Japanese fleet below 10%, unless I feel clearly behind and hope the opponent will bite and get diced.
