@AD: Not that it was entirely decisive but I think by skipping Egypt you just put the last nail into the Axis’ coffin. It was obvious that Germans could not get India so sitting in Persia would mean the German army would end up cut off in the middle of nowhere.
If you march into Egypt and wreck Havoc in Africa you at least make sure the income keeps close to even. Also, you might have had enough troops to march down to South Africa which prove to be a game charges in some games.
Also I think it was not advisable to take the entire slow army South as they are - surprise - too slow to really help for the South Africa Blitz.
I think it would have been better to just take a few slowies down for attrition battles to save the valuable fast units and keep the rest to keep the Russians honest and - more important - to keep control over Cauc and Volgo.
Just imagine Germans sitting in Egypt + Africa taking african territories + Cauc and Volog access = 90+ income
Of course the Indians will then join the middle East again but this at least would have kept the critical mass away from Japan.
Maybe all this would have only prolonged your misery :-)
I guess the foundation for the Allied win was laid early when the Germans did not take a breath deep enough that allows them to break through Rostov into the money territories. Although you finally did, supported by your extremely lucky hit and run at Bryansk I believe that was the key issue that bought UK enough time to create this unreal monster army in India. In case the Germans break through 3-4 turns earlier I believe there could have been an entirely different dynamic allowing the Germans to create a real thread an taking India and thus providing Japan with a VC victory.
I completely agree with your assessment. I discussed the same with Adam via messanger. I regret not just going for Egypt. And yah I played too defensively in Europe and neglected my push on the eastern front.
