What will be wrong with AAAE: 1940?

  • face it, best thing about AAA is the concept.

  • @Frontovik:

face it, best thing about AAA is the concept.

I said that somewhere, so I definitely agree with you on that statement.

  • What will be wrong with A&AE: 1940? It is pretty obvious that the United States will start the game being at war with France and France will receive 20 Mech Inf while Germany receives 3 Mech Inf. The Soviets will have 15 of each naval ship and only 5 Infantry. Also the map will actually be Europe’s political borders during WWI.

  • Well I can imagine the tech system will have some flaws, seeing as they delved away from it for a whole game, thus becoming rusty. Germany will surely be short mech infantry (although they can confiscate Frances when they take her out of the game lol). Honestly I think you guys are missing the scariest part. The NEXT game is when it is going to go to hell in a hand basket. I figure the next axis and allies will have no plastic pieces with only cardboard tokens, but we may get lucky i guess as this cost reduction may allow them to add the paper money back in. Or to throw us for a loop an abbacus.

Well, if we’re honest with ourselves, if WOTC produces the next game, chances are they’ll charge MORE for the version that has all cardboard tokens then they charged us for the ones with the nice plastic playing pieces.  But, if this turns out to be the case, FMG will end up with plenty of business from disgruntled fans buying up scores of their sets of plastic pieces for the game.  :-P

  • Honestly, if there are any big flaws (map drawn poorly as is the current case wth P40, not enough pieces, crappy boxes, etc) I will just never buy another set. After this I will have revised, 50th, P40/E40, d-day, and battle of the bulge. I should be set for that type of game and can move 100% to fantasy flight who make games that are good, seem to be correct out of the box most of the time, and have real support.

Yeah, Fantasy Flight Games would make a great A&A type game. I wonder why they haven’t.

Also the map will actually be Europe’s political borders during WWI.

Actually, It will be the political borders of sometime between 780 and 800. The game starts with only the Byzantines at war with the Arabs. After three turns, if Bulgaria is still neutral, it automatically declares war on Constantinople. Also on the third turn, the U.S. enters the war on the Byzantines’ side. Up until that point, it can lend-lease Greek Fire and dromonds, but only up to fifteen IPC’s worth of each.

Dude, this was reply #42 not 4:20. Maybe you should check out Warlords of Europe.

  • I think you have the wrong forum.

  • This thread is one more stupid post from getting closed down. I think the original intent was comedy or sarcasm, then it became a free for all.

Either make it useful or forget it.

  • I am just hoping that at least the rulebook is better and there are no typos. I don’t think they will improve anything else.

  • I think there were more play testers brought in for the Euro/global games. Some of the changes we are getting from the Errata concerning political rules and such may be a result of how they want things to progress in the up coming game(s). Remember its been said we are part of the working progress. I just hope the rule book(s) for these up coming games was held up long enough to incorporate the changes that the Pac 40 Errata has put forth, so we get a fairly clean rule book that will override the Pac 40 rules for the most part. I heard the release date got pushed from June to August, that could be why. I would think that the % of people that bought Pac 40, and will also buy Euro 40 would be very high (over 80%). As far as the game board & unit placements issues, those are minor IMO, and easily put to rest w/Errata.

It is unfortunate though for those who bought Pac 40 and don’t know about these changes. There should be a brief note placed in the Euro game regarding the changes to Pac 40 with a reference to the AH web sight now that the Errata is official and posted.

  • All that I can say on this issue is that I will probably not pre-order the game this time around.

  • Who are you kidding BD, you know your going to buy it. Maybe you don’t pre-order it, so you’ll pay more. I didn’t pre-order Pac 40, because I like to give my $ to the local hobby shops. As it turned out I got Pac 40 a day early, and they knock off $20.00 because one of the box corners had a tiny dent, so we paid about what they were going for online. Well my son paid, because it was an X-mas gift. Any way come August you’ll be getting the Euro side one way or another. Your just as passionate as rest of us and can’t wait to combine those 2 boards.

  • if it hadn’t been for the for the map and rulebook, i would not buy the game. unfortunatly i can’t get it anywhere else. so yes, i will get europe 1940, but not 2 copies to get enough pieces. thanks go to a certain company for making custom pieces.

Yes, I am passionate/stupid but I am just going to wait and buy it at my local game store this time.

  • Nothing will be wrong with A&A:Eurpoe 1940.  It will combine with Pacific 1940 to create the best version of the best hobby game ever.  It will be gorgeous and well supported with a concise FAQ.

FFG are my favourite hobby game company.  They are supposedly working on a Supremacy inspired game, Reigns Of Power:
    http://www.boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/22824/reins-of-power
    I wait with baited breath.

That said, they are not perfect either.  There have been complaints that the Cosmic Encounter alien sheets from the expansion are larger than those that came with the original.  The figures from Frostmarch are out of scale with the other expansions and base set (the cards from this set are also mis-cut), and the Talisman FAQ took over a year to be released and still leaves many unanswered questions.  My Middle Earth Quest figures are brittle and many have snapped.  Marvel Heroes is often said to have power balance issues.  Those are the games I own (along witnh Conan, which I haven’t played yet).  I’m sure there are problems with the games I don’t own too.

Again, I love FFG, but I think the attitude towards AH is a bit unfair lately.

  • I got excited about Reigns of Power when you mentioned it, but after seeing how long it has been delayed with no recent news, I kind of think we have another Blitzkrieg and Bombers. Look at the original release date shown here:

  • Which game doesn’t have an errata? Classic (2nd edition) had an additional printed booklet to explain many of the rules (no internet back then), Revised also had a FAQ and I’d be surprised if any of the other A&A games didn’t had their own FAQ/Errata as well.
This is characteristic of many games because either you have a large testing external team that can play thousands of games and detect all the possible interpretations for the rules and how the game will develop (not likely in any game). I remember having huge discussions playing Risk about some basic issues: you simply had to agree with the persons you were playing with about some supposedly basic rules that weren’t well clarified on the rulebook.

Another completely different thing to me are typos and/or lack of pieces. That is simply lack of work/judgement and unexcusable, unlike not being able to predict every possible outcome/interpretation.
