• I was wondering, does anyone bother to ever do strategic bombing raids on a AB/NB?

If i understand the rules correctly, it is a high risk operation with very low gain: you risk losing a 12 IPC bomber (instant AA)  to do a maximum of 3 IPC damage (since the first 3 doesn’t really needs to be paid off to have the AB/NB operational again…)
And the enemy can repair all damage in the beginning of its turn, before any movement is made, so any AB/NB of importance won’t ever be taken down for even 1 turn.

Unless i have read the rules wrong, i really don’t see the point of such SBR’s, unless maybe at the very end of a game…
(if they got repaired at the end of the victim’s turn, then i would see some use for it)

  • SBR’s can be useful on an airbase, if the attacking player does so before the defender can scramble aircraft in the surrounding sea zone. ( I assume since SBR raids take place before aircraft can scramble, this would be a tactical goal )

They can deadly en mass, on various targets, at least in theory. The overall goal being economic disruption, forcing the player to divert war resources (IPC) to repair them. I’ve never been in the position to do the latter though.

    Nope.  Scrambling occurs before combat.

    Oh wow.

Well, it tears that to pieces then. At least the SBR can do economic disruption.

That’s the way we see it.

Well, you must be reading the rules the same way we are, because we came to the same conclussion.

  • A couple things to consider on this.  What if you are maxing damage on the enemy’s IC, and/or they are not fixing it?  If they also have bases that they will want to use, it gives you another option to make them spend IPC’s, and use your strat bombers if you’re not using them for anything else.

Like in my current game with Funcioneta, he built a major IC and a naval base on Korea with the USA.  I had lots of Strat bombers with nothing much else to do, so bombed them both.  He needed the naval base fixed so he could move boats 3 spaces.  My bombers were of no use for defense and had nothing else to do, so it was a decent option to be able to bomb the Major and the NB at the same time.

Hey, guys, when I asked Krieg about this same thing, he made a VERY interesting point.  Depending on timing, you could bomb an enemy Base and it would then be unusable to their ALLIES until the base owner’s next turn.  So you can effectively disable the capability without your enemy being able to fix it.  You heard it here first.  :-D

Ah, another advantage for Japan, just we needed…

    Yes, right….

But I’m actually thinking in terms of the global game when this will actually come into play more often…

  • if you can stop enemy bombers from taking off from a stategic air base, it might buy you some time to rebuild air defense(fighters) to deter SBRs

It could work if you have ships in the Sea Zone absorbing the Scramble hits, also you would need to send some escorts to the AB as a precaution if your opponent decides to use the airforce as interceptors.

I also made it a house rule that the damage amount of your Airbase corresponds with the number of air units you can dispatch to participate in a scramble, for example; if i inflicted 2 damage points on an enemy AB, that’s 2 less aircraft he is unable to use in a battle on his next turn (unless the AB is repaired).

In Pac SBR a Jap AB could be a great strat in the right circumstances because of turn order. Say Jap uses an island AB to protect its navy. The US could take the heat and SBR w/escorts. Jap will scramble its air, but hits on a 2 or less, and the battle only last 1 round (of course it sucks the US only hits on a 1). Say two US bmrs survive the dog fight and the AA guns. They only need to SBR an AB 3 points to disable it. Then UK and Anz can attack the Jap fleet w/o worrying about Jap ftrs scrambling (they’re grounded). Jap can only repair the AB on its own turn, which hasn’t come around yet. So it works both ways  :-D
