• When I read the item below (excerpted from http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-27512405), I thought at first glance that I’d found an amusing WWII-vintage story showing that “IPCs” stood for something other than Industrial Production Certificates.  A closer look showed that the item is about ICPs rather than IPCs…but it’s still an amusing story.

A lot of jargon in economics has been borrowed from the military, says Prof Nellis. Words and phrases like campaign, rally the troops, follow the leader, keep your powder dry, even recruitment.

The problem, though, is military language is not designed to brook dissent or new ideas, but for obedience.

The military itself isn’t immune. BBC journalist Alistair Cooke, broadcaster of Letter from America, remembered a choice phrase from World War Two, during a meeting of commanders in General Eisenhower’s headquarters in London.

An American colonel said: “How many ICPs have been counted?”

“What,” asked Winston Churchill, “are ICPs?”

    “Impaired combatant personnel, sir.”

“Never let me hear that detestable phrase again. If you’re talking about British troops, you will refer to them as wounded soldiers.”

Alistair Cooke concluded: “Muddy language proceeds from muddy minds.”

  • Brilliant Marc . Thank you.

    Good post Marc!

I however thought it would be some humorous post about Insane Clown Posse playing Axis & Allies. Then I thought about it and realized that those guys would probably not have anything to do with A&A or know how to play it. I also realized that someone of your caliber would no way in hell be listening to Insane Clown Posse. After a split second of private mental joking I read the post LOL.

  • @toblerone77:

would no way in hell be listening to Insane Clown Posse.

I draw a complete blank on that one.  Who are they?
