Russian trenches and conscripts, all with power of 1, rolled 3-for7.
Usually I do well as Com against Rus, but Rus getting the bunker tech on round 1 really set me back. Not just a tech on round 1, but the only tech that works against Com. Without bunkers, a single offensive ground unit can destroy an undefended trench(s) instantly. But with bunker, each trench can fire back until its 2 hit points are gone, plus defenders. I used 17 troops to take out 1 conscript and 3 trenches; and lost 3 troops. Finally increased my income. Normally build hardly any conscripts, but you have so many that it overwhelms my more powerful units. The beauty of Com is that I can build as many conscripts as I can afford. Now I have almost as many conscripts as you have in Eastern Russia.
G should have continued the attack on UK in North Sea instead of retreating. Brits had 2 BB’s repaired to my 1, and my subs lost power going to defense while UK subs gained power going to offense. So my odds would have been better on attack. Battle calc predicts you would have had only 3 ships left instead of the 6 after your counterattack. In fact, using the actual dice results from your counterattack, we each rolled 4 hits. But my 2 subs rolled 2’s, which would have been hits on offense, for a total of 6-of-7 hits. All 6 of my subs missed on round 1. And your sub rolled a 2, which would have been a miss, for a total of only 3 hits. So at the end of round 2, I would have had 4 ships left, a BB, BC & 2 CAs, vs you with only 3 ships, 2 BBs & a BC. Battle calc would have given me the win at 82% with 1 1/2 ships left. What a difference that would have made.
The moral of that story is not to automatically retreat in a sea battle after a bad die roll. Land battle retreats usually work better because there often are friendly forces behind you and unlike subs, infantry gain value on defense and lose value on offense. Well, this just gives you a chance, given that with CP in control of the Med this early, Allies are stuck defending everywhere in Med at once, while Turks can concentrate attack each turn. UK and Fr factories can only build 2, while T and A have high capacity and lots of cash. And Fra will have to scramble against A in Switz.
