New Axis & Allies Global War Variant (free map)

  • Positronica,

I must agree, this is an excellent map, and aside from a couple of typos and the one missing sea zone as mentioned in a previous post, I love this map!  We have a game here in 2 weeks and will be using your map, so I’ll let you know how the game goes and if any problems come up while playing a full game session. :)

If you make any changes or alterations to the map please let us know where to download the revisions from!

  • @pdel21:

    Positronica,

This is an incredible map.  I would like to plaque it for durability.  Before I do that however, I have noticed a handful of errors (typos mostly).  I am not very good at this PhotoShop program.  I have tried to edit this map myself, but obviously I am missing something (I have downloaded the correct files).  The program will not let me select text to edit it.  Here are the errors that I have noticed:

    NEUTRALS:
    COLUMBIA should be COLOMBIA

    GERMANY:
AUSTRIA is incorrectly labelled as RUMANIA
LIBYA should all be part of ITALY (you can change the name of LIBYA territory to FEZZAN)

    ITALY:
    SARDINA should be SARDINIA
    CYRENACIA should be CYRENAICA
    ABBYSINNIA should be ABYSSINIA
ITALIAN SOMALIALAND should be ITALIAN SOMALILAND

Would be better served to have a naval base at the heel of Italy since TARANTO was there, home to the majority of the fleet and sight of major battle
Also I have a jpg for the Italian Fascia (the symbol for Italy for World War II), this may make a better marker for Italy since this flag was adopted after WWII

    JAPAN:
PALAN ISLAND should be PALAU ISLAND

    SOVIET UNION:
    VOLGAROD should be VOLGOGRAD
NORTHERN KAZAHK should be NORTHERN KAZAKH
KAZAHK SSR should be KAZAKH SSR
    YAKUT should be YAKUTIA SSR
KVENKI SSR should be YEVENKI SSR

    UNITED KINGDOM:
    GIBRALTER should be GIBRALTAR
    MAYLAY should be MALAY
MOZAMBIQUE belonged to Portugal and should probably be Neutral, but that is a minor point

I think that is all of them.  Is it possible for you to correct these (at least the typos) and repost?  Alternatively if you could let me know how to go about editing in Paint Shop I can do it.

Thanks again for this fantastic piece of work!

Yowzah!  That’s a lot of typos.  I figured I probably had a few in there somewhere, but I wasn’t expecting that many.  Well, if I have some time in the next week or so, I’ll try to sit down and correct them and repost.  You could try to make the changes yourself in Paint Shop Pro, but it would be a little tricky.  I got the text in the map to look the way it does by stacking a couple layers together and doing some feathering to the layer in the back.  If you’re not real familiar with Paint Shop Pro, it would be hard to duplicate, even if I wrote out instructions.  Also, if any of the territitories with mispelled names have starting units in them, then the country cards will need to be updated, too.

As for your question about the naval base in Italy, what sea zone did you envision it touching?  Sea Zone 40 or Sea Zone 41?  Also, keep in mind that naval bases only come into play if there’s another naval base three zones away.

  • please give us a PDF or full size Jpeg.

  • The naval base in Taranto should be in Sea Zone 41. I have also attached roundels for Nationalist Chinese and the Italian Fascia to attach to the map.  The Chinese one would be cool to add since it is a different colour already anyway and has the appearance of a separate nation (even though USA plays it).  The Italian one as I mentioned earlier is more appropriate.

    Cheers

  • Positronica,

Any progress on the edits to the map??? My group is really looking forward to playing it.  Thanks again for your hard work.

    Cheers

  • Great Map, I’m looking forward to the update as well.  I was wondering if you could save the file as a PSD as photoshop can’t read PSP files.  I don’t know what version of PSP you have but the newer versions should be able to save files as PSDs.  Thanks.

  • Message for Meethos:
You can download a free trial of Paintshop online, open it as a PSP and then resave it as a PSD for photoshop, that is what I did to it since I use Photoshop. :)

    Message for Positronica:
My gaming group has a game planned for next weekend (Saturday), we will be using your map which I have printed on a full size sheet, I will post photos and let you know how the game went on it. Thanks for your efforts, I am sure a lot of people will have some good fun thanks to you!

    Derek…

  • Any suggestions as to how to print out the map.  I am having trouble printing it as a banner using corel.

  • No suggestions from me, I am using a 48" width printer, the paper is a roll, so it can be 48" wide by however long… I know someone on here was recently talking about using a program to print the larger maps out on single sheets and splice them together though.

  • gee way to make me jealous

  • Hey cool, looks like my Supreme Command map is getting some good use.  :-D
I like the added background images.  Looks nice.
I actually have the original map done in vector graphics using paint shop pro.  Every territory is actually made up of many individual vector points.  Was a pain in the butt to make, but produced a nice smooth result.  I’ll have to get back into this stuff eventually.  I just don’t have the extended time to try testing a game of this scale right now.  With young kids my gaming is reduced to much shorter games.  Lots of fast play miniatures type games.  I’ve gotten pretty good and painting up 6 and 15mm figs.

I have a link to a bunch of pics that a guy took who printed out the map and ran some games with it.  I’ll have to post a link to it.  It’s pretty impressive when you see it laid out on a table with all the pieces on it.  :-o

  • Hey Positronica,

You really did a great job on the map details.  Paragon was asking about getting ahold of the original vector map and I mentioned that maybe you would like a copy to layer in your additions to make for a better quality print.  jpg’s are always kinda messy looking.  Especially for something this big.  The vectors are very crisp.
In addition I can convert your map into a Mapview PBEM module if you want.  I have all of the other games already made along with vector maps too.
If you haven’t used Mapview before I can get you some more details.  Plus I’m sure there are a few others around here who use this program.

Here is a link to the website I had a while back.  Haven’t updated it for quite a while but I probably need to.

    Der Panzinator,

Do you have a Mapview module for A&A Classic (2nd Edition)?  I haven’t been able to find one anywhere.

Well I just went to the Printers today to get this thing done right. To be honest I didn’t realize how big this map is. 15 square feet!! First stop I made they wanted $10 a square foot. No way. After a couple of stops and questions asked I found a place that would do Map and all the cards for $80. Kinda expensive but still the cheapest.  It’s being printed on some kind of Photograph paper. I figure I’ll just roll it up, or put plexi glass over it for game play. Anyway Now All I have to do is figure out which axis and allies rules to use.

  • Thankfully I have my own HP DesignJet plotter at work to print this out on so it is free.  I want to get it plaqued which will cost me $200, which is why I am waiting and hoping for Positronica to correct the spelling mistakes.  If I am going to invest that kind of money in it, I would like it to be perfect (at least from an appearance point of view).  I hope Positronica is able to do it, I understand how people can get quite busy especially this time of year.

So A few territories are misspelled, **** it I don’t think that that will take away from the game in the name of looks like I said the Map is Huge so mu to look at. especially when set up

  • This past weekend we had our gaming group session where we used the big map thatI got from Positronica on this forum. It worked out great! The game went pretty well, although it seemed a little too strong on the Allies side. I played Italy because it was new and I wanted to try it out, I did pretty well in Africa and holding the Med. Sea. A lot of fun was had by all. The game started at 10am and the Axis threw in the towel around 8pm that night, so it was a good 10 hour session… it could have gone on a few more hours, and everyone agreed that there was a SLIM chance the Axis might have been able to get a victory, but it wasn’t one that anyone felt like playing to find out! haha.

The only thing I would do on the map for our next session is enlarge it a little more than I had it, as you can see from the photos, I sized it for my dining room table, but I could go another 6" or more and it would still fit, as it was now the only two trouble spots were Berlin and all of England, just too small to fit all the pieces, everywhere else was ok though…  The only thing I would change on the deployment/country cards would be to either give the axis slightly more troops/money, or lower down the allies, specifically the USA, they dominated the entire game, which is fine, but it just seemed a little too easy. :)

Some photos can be found here:

Excellent Map, a LOT of fun…

    Thanks!
    Derek…

  • The map is too small for all the units you got. Piece density is the same or worse than the actual revised game due to many territories. I would consider making a copy thats at least 2 feet longer and one foot taller to accomodate all the plastic. Id like to be able to get close ups of the set up sheets so i can see how its balanced. Also can you tell us the IPC totals starting out?

  • You are correct, it was pretty much the same “piece density” as a normal axis and allies revised game, which was not bad, and not a problem to play, but could have been larger…  The only real set-up problems were England and Berlin.

I used the cards provided with the map that are linked in a message at the start of this thread, all of the info is there and the cards are there and able to be printed out, etc., so that is where you will find the info.

Like I had said, everyone in our group agreed that the Allies were at slightly too great of an advantage with troops and income, but not horribly bad, a few minor adjustments would really help.

  • Death’s Head,

I agree that it wont take away from game play, but there are more than spelling mistakes.  Libya should be Italy’s not Germany’s and I think there are a few others that I pointed out in a earlier post.  That being said, if he chooses not to fix the issues, there really is nothing I can do about it, but I will not be plaquing it then.  I’d rather not print multiple copies because they keep getting ruined.

    Cheers,

    Pat
