15L DizzKneeLand33 (Axis) vs Whackamatt (Allies+15) Game 2

  • 20 18 17 15

Hey, Dizz.  I was running some “what if” scenarios in local…only it wasn’t in local!  I got some favorable dice for attacking Persia, but that’s not the battle plan I want.  Please disregard.  I’m still trying to figure out the best way forward here.

  • 20 16 15 14

    Whack,

Here’s my problem with that.  You rolled your attacking dice.  Not only did you roll them, you rolled them until completion of the battle.  Once you’ve done that, it’s a “card laid is a card played” phenomenon.  Do you think that after rolling my first attacking die of my Japanese turn I would have liked to have done something different?  You can tell from my posts above.  It’s not because of the results (my results were accomplished), but because I changed my mind about the plan.  And, that was really true after looking at my German purchase after running combat – the combat had nothing to do with me wanting to change my purchase, but since I had already run combat, well, the purchase was done.

I don’t mind edits for small things, but to remove a combat after it has already taken place (good or bad) is contrary to the spirit of the rules and to league.  That’s why, in spite of my frustration with myself, I never once asked you to redo my turn.  That would not have even been fair of me to ask of you – I knew what the league rules were when I started the game.

Sorry, but, again, I’m just going by what the league rules are.  There is a combat simulator in the program?!  I’m not sure why anyone would roll “local dice” during an actual game…

    That’s cool, I thought I would ask.

Running local is something I do for the tougher games.  You run scenarios for “What if I attack here how would it look compared to attacking there and buying this?”  Then you have two game files or more to decide which would end up being better for you.  Then reload the game and play with dice.  It’s essentially running turn simulations, but that’s the risk you run as screwing up as I did.

The end result is I believe I just gave you the game, but we’ll let the dice decide.  I did just drop my chance of taking back Egypt by 20-30%, which is just giving them game away after 16 rounds.  you are right though, it was “a card played.”

good game.  you win. if only i had bombed egypt instead on the US turn.   :|

  • 20 16 15 14

Wow, Whack, very good game!!  I was quite fortunate there – it felt like that game kept going back and forth throughout.

I really thought that killing the neutrals had some merit, and now I’m rethinking that.  You still had tons of play, and quite frankly, I think if you get Egypt there that you win.  There was a different Egypt battle earlier on that I made a defensive mistake over, but all and all tons of fun.

I know you’ve been busy, but I know we can now both play 3/5, so if you are interested in playing again just let me know either here (if you wanna do another one now) or via PM whenever you have time.

  • 20 18 17 15

Yeah, I’m up for more.  We can do a rebid.  I definitely feel I would have gone on to win had I taken Egypt. That’s why I’m upset for not bombing the airfield.  No scrambling meant an extra 3 bombers for the fight, and I didn’t lose by that much.  Not that it will hurt my win % much.  :|

I think attacking the neutrals has merit, but I usually use it as a quicker route to Egypt through Turkey.  It can become too hard to keep the Allies from taking Spain with concerted effort from the US. Easier once Russia falls, but then you’re spending money against Spain and not Egypt.  The downside as the Axis, is it gives the Allies a lot of extra cash that more than offsets Spain/Sweden/Turkey, so it should be a tactical advantage/surprise.  I think you did it a little too early, and helped me out-produce Germany by a lot.

So what was your take on my Pacific strategy?  I’m using this season to try and come up with some new Allied strategies.  I reject the notion that the game is inherently unbalanced towards the Axis, so much that new NOs or some other fix are needed.  The game is so complex, i just don’t feel the Allies have exhausted all of their options, so I’m trying some new ones.

The basic premise is that the Allies have enough resources from Round 1 to shut down Japan, using a Russia/China/India/ANZAC with some help from the US.  It’s not all-in from the US. You’re kind of sacrificing Russia by sending stuff into China, but Japan never becomes a beast, allowing more resources to go to Europe sooner.  And once India is making 25-30 a round and Japan only has some Russian territories for money, India can help support Egypt and the Middle East long before Russia falls and Germany is threatening.

The trickiest part so far has been finding the right combination of support from the US in the Pacific.  If India/ANZAC are going for the combined navy, do I just use the US as sub/bomber support while they help hold Gibraltar?  Or do I use carriers and destroyers to give them extra hits?
