    Have you had practice against someone who gears up slowly, the way I do? (G4/J3 or J4)

    Yes, some dice have been wacky here and there, but not really that much. My opener was poor with the dice, which was painful, and I keep getting aircraft shot down with single rolls of 2 or less, but I’ve also had a bunch of rounds against you that went my way on land.

    I’m truly curious, because I feel like I played my normal game, which is a fairly decent one, and you’ve been one step ahead. I’m not asking that you show your hand, I’m just not sure how you gained and held the initiative. We can always debrief after the game, if that’s cool - after all, I still have a strong Germany and 30 Japanese aircraft… but victory seems far away for me.

    I have to think a great deal about Japan’s turn…  :-P

    20 losses?  Well, a lot of it is just luck.  I had a game against Dizzkneeland that I was set to win.  All I had to do is capture UK. I had 98% odds and I LOST.  INSANE.  We had a rematch as him as the Axis and he got PERFECT german opening.  I mean he lost like just a couple infantry and had like 4 subs left.  It was downhill for the Allies after that.

    I know the top tier players like Gamerman/Bold/Cow talk big about strategy etc but luck plays a huge roll.  If 2 players are close to evenly matched then luck will decide.

    I have to say though, I space out on some games.  I lost a couple against novices by sheer laziness.  It’s funny, some games just grab me and I pay real close attention. I won 3 games in a row against Bold because he smack talked me and kept me focused.  Others I phone in sometimes to disastrous results. If I’m not paying attention and someone pulls some new strategy on me and I don’t catch it then I will lose. Look at my games against whackamatt.  He’s a pretty unconventional player and I thought I could beat him but he beat me 2 times. The first was because he did a G1 on Russia which I was not prepared for and then got lucky.  The 2nd time he pulled a sneak move that I could have stopped 100% and won the game even though I was winning. I just wasn’t watching close enough.

    All that being said, the Axis do have an advantage. Maybe 55/54 to start, but if the Axis get lucky the first round or 2 the allies can be in a tough spot. If the Axis get poor luck on the start it’s game over.  I had a game against the mighty Zhukov as the Axis and I just couldn’t get a break.  I think I played very well strategically but the dice just bled out my units to no end - real annoying nickel and dime stuff.

    There are however a couple time I lost just outright to better play.  Snake Eyes killed me using a german bomber strategy that was good.  Tyzog killed me.  Gamerman got me a couple times, but annoyingly a lot of that was luck.  I had a fight against him where in a major attack I got ZERO hits…. blah!

    Anyway, long story short I guess this game has got my attention!

At the end of it all you gave the essence of your performance in our game - you’re engaged with the game at a high level, and it shows. I can tell when someone is focused, because I’m playing my normal (conservatively aggressive) style but wondering what the h$%l is going on  :-)

    It would have been more proper for me to mention your 24 wins. That’s a lot of experience on this site, in this league. I started out winning my first four games, and I’ve run into a few buzzsaws since. What I’m beginning to realize is that good players should be around .500 with their overall record around here - we’re all pretty good. The top players are ahead of the curve on a few strategies (bombers bombers bombers for allweneed and Hank13 for example), so the first time they catch people who haven’t experienced it, they beat them.

    And yes, no matter the skill, at some point the dice catch up with all of us. In our game I think it affected me early, but is no excuse for where we stand now. Which is you with both an economic and momentum advantage  :-D There’s a long way to go before I decide anything, because I’ve stuck around in plenty of games and been rewarded… and I’ve let people hang around in games I was winning and been punished…

    Your paragraph on the focus is spot on - some games become a flow of mistakes and missed opportunities… and some games you get locked in. You’re right about Bold and the smack talk :wink: - I’ve seen him get into border wars with Cow, etc., but he and I get along really well during games. I don’t talk any smack and that might be why.

    I’m similar to you in that the first time I see a new strategy I tend to take my lumps, and then adapt in the next game. Unfortunately for me, that means losing the first time I face someone who is innovative.
