      On adding a hit differential calculator, I think having this additional info in the game would be quite interesting and useful even though I do agree that not all dice luck in the game is equal. Its more information but will sometimes lend itself to a misinterpretation of the actual luck of each player.

      I do think though that if there is a way to avoid counting superfluous hits, that would make it more accurate. Some dice luck doesn’t matter to the game  and so shouldn’t be counted. If 6 fighters attack one destroyer the consequences in game terms of a lucky roll of 6 hits is the same as an ‘unlucky’ role of 1 hit or an average roll of 3 hits. It doesn’t actually matter to the outcome of the game but the measure would make it appear significant.

      A TUV differential might have other problems, but it would solve this since superfluous hits aren’t going to impact on it.

      But I thought another way to do is to take this hit differential counter and modify it when the hits exceed casualties in a combat. That is to say, in combat rounds where the expected number of hits and the actual number of hits both exceed the number of casualties taken, the hit differential of the victor in that combat round doesn’t get counted in the hit differential. This assumes we can break it down by combat round and I’m not sure if that can be done.

      If that can’t be done then perhaps in situations where the combat only goes one round, and the expected number of hits exceeds the number of casualties, we could just ignore the hit differential of the winner of that combat. That would at least remove all situations where you send a stack after a lone unit. I think?

      My interpretation of that is scramble or no scramble, or even no airbase, I can move whatever I want in the combat phase to a friendly seazone to support that invasion.

      Your interpretation is incorrect.  You may only move units that will participate in or support the amphibious assault into a friendly sea zone.  Air and sea units that will participate in the assault include transports offloading land units, battleships and/or cruisers bombarding, and possibly a warship to escort the transports (if needed because of an enemy sub that will be ignored - bombarding battleships and/or cruisers can fulfill this role).  Supporting units can include any type of air or sea unit desired, but can only be moved there if necessary due to the possibility of a defending scramble - there being both an operative enemy air base and eligible air units present.

      As others have pointed out, the same criteria apply when determining whether units beginning the turn in the sea zone may move out of it during combat movement.  Such units restricted from moving out in noncombat movement are those that were actually involved in combat and transports that offloaded.

      This is a good place to plug Gencon–taking a trip to do your hobby seems crazy until you actually do it because your peer group is people who did the same thing.

      This type of game always has a limited audience but that doesn’t mean that you can’t keep things going.  Right now the KC club is working on playtesting some mods, doing a few games a month, hashing out new strategies and setups.  If you build it and look for the community, its there.

      I talk by email and phone to quite a few of the guys I’ve met here I consider them kindred spirits and friends.  One thing I brought up is War Room, but many of the guys consider it a different kind of game, another “all dayer” that may not really compete with AxA because its so different.

      The cruiser sculpt for the US Navy is based on the US Navy’s Portland class heavy cruisers (CA). The US built two ships to that plan: USS Portland CA-33 and USS Indianapolis CA-35.

      So if you get lucky and sink a US cruiser on it’s way to the Philippines with an IJN submarine, you just may have sent Quinn adrift with the sharks…

      Hey, I love Axis and Allies as much as anybody around these parts… but sometimes I think you guys take it way too seriously… applying math formulas and algorithms and debating the correct equation to come to statistically logical conclusion to a formula… omg… guys step back… A&A is a game that is supposed to be a fun pastime to escape the dreariness of the real world for a few hours and just have a good time… if you’re debating mathematical formulas, you’ve lost the purpose of playing a game…

      No not unpopular. That’s understandable. Its the norm in the 40 game now because guys want to change it. It was getting boring to them and wanted a change and they felt the piece values need to be changed and new pieces added.

      I only play 39 games and those games have more stuff in them than the 40 game. Yes I’m one of the guilty ones that has to try testing one or 2 things in every game.

      Also the changes that are happening in 40 game now are whats already in the 39 games up to a certain point.

      If you ever get to the global games after your kids get older ( that be great ) you may see why the 40 OOB game needs a change.

      We’re just trying to make the games better I would say.

      My concern was not related to turn 1 or 2 but to later German turn:
      9 additional Art for a Russian counterattack may cause a problem for Germany advancing to Belarus or Western Ukraine or one turn later to Bryansk, because Italy cannot take this area first (RU takes it back before the German turn) and therefore G cannot land their air on top of it’s army.
      12 additional Inf may delay a G 6 attack on Russia (Simon33 was faster while I typed this post).

      My concern was based on a game otherwise played without bid or only with a small bid (for example: balanced mod;  our group with other houesrules).
      If you play OOB-rules with a bid around 30 IPC, then Gargantua’s idea is very fine (I already understood that he only wants to make one simple adjustment), the inherent bid goes to Russia and does not destroy the game in the MED (as usual IMO).
      I will have to try it to see more effects.

      The z102 rule allows USA to sink the German fleet with carrier-based planes post-sealion, even if japan is still Neutral and bombers have nowhere to land (which is unlikely).

      I’ve thought some more about the details of this strategy. Firstly, it is not advised against a G1 DOW. So if we proceed on the assumption there is no G1 DOW, I like these builds/moves:

      place 2 inf in Stalingrad

      move the 2 inf in Caucasus to Kazakhstan - China bound.

      move a tank to Turkmenistan.

      move a AA gun towards China

      remaining 2 mecs + 1 tank + planes move towards China.

      UK West India inf activates East Persia

      That way you can still take Iraq with a G2/G3 DOW.

      If there is no G2 DOW, move the Stalingrad inf + Turkmenistan tank to Caucasus and leave Persia for the UK. Take NW Persia USSR3 & Iraq USSR4. With a G2 DOW, Turkmenistan tank activates Persia and Stalingrad inf proceed to the eastern front with Germany. Tac bomber positions to support the attack on Iraq USSR3.

      Downside - are too many troops being stripped from the Eastern Front?
