G40 League House Rule project

  • '15

I can’t recall where the document containing all the rules for this was linked.  I remember you couldn’t edit your earlier post.  Maybe a new thread, to increase visibility?

Anyway, I am happy to playtest these rules (using abattlemap) with anyone tier 3 or 4.  If they’re better than that, you won’t get much useful data.

  • Right, this thread was converted.
I’d start a new thread but I would need someone to sticky it.
I’ll just provide the link again now
I made a few edits and changes since your post.

When I find the time, I should play it with someone because a lot of things will no doubt become obvious and then they can be fixed

You know, one very minor tweak that occurs to me is to apply the 3 IPC Russian NO to Sweden as well, since this ruleset give more opportunity to attack strict neutrals.  Historically, Russia would have been happy to have that, right?

I see where you’re coming from historically with the convoy rules (limiting the damage), but wasn’t part of the original idea to simplify the game a bit more?

  • Yes, part of the idea was to simplify, but another part of the idea is to reduce ridiculousness.  You should not be able to convoy EUS/CUS for 22 damage a turn (extreme example).

Agree about NO for Sweden, will add

  • If anyone can tell me why Sweden was never attacked or involved in WWII, that would be helpful, thanks.  I guess I can do an internet search.

OK, I have a new thought.

Maybe Switzerland and Sweden should just be out of play - they cannot be invaded or occupied and do not have armies or IPC value.

    Thoughts?

That would remove a German NO. So the question then would be what would you add for the Germans to counter this or what would you remove from the allies to make life a little easier for the Germans. Personally I would leave the NO alone. At this point the NO is more beneficial to the axis, but tying Sweden to Switzerland, means the Allies can go for Norway-Sweden, two US minors there can be a nightmare for the Axis.

Also I am more then happy to help testing  I dont care about who it is I am facing either.

On a side node I am still unable to post links :?

  • I need you to explain to me how this affects an NO.
Germany gets an NO for Norway + Denmark (+Sweden if Sweden is in play, but Sweden would not be in play), so it seems NO’s are unaffected.

Do you know ABattlemap, Noz?  I don’t know how to say this, but if you’re not a really good A&A player, maybe Shin Ji would like to play it with you?

  • '15

Yea.  I know how to play the game, and I’m familiar with the basic strategies and all that, but I’m tier 3 or 4 at best.  I haven’t actually played any league games yet, but I plan on doing so soon after my current games end.

I was wondering, though - Gamerman, did you intend to make it a very good idea for the Allies to attack Spain?  It seems a very win-win for them since Germany and Italy are very rarely in a position to profit from allied neutrals in South America.

Given that Allies need a boost in the regular game, this might be a good thing.

I figured the NO would be removed if and when Sweden would be removed from play. However I am still against it. I once invaded Norway and Sweden with the US and from my perspective having a minor ic in both will help the US a lot. Then again the US can now safely invade France itself, without losing those minor ics. I think it would be best to simply leave it as it is and test it. Having more options is better then removing them al together. Unless having those options is bad for the game.

I never used Abattlemap. I played 20 games at most so far and am probably a tier 3-4 player.

  • You guys are right - there are too many major changes going on to be able to effectively evaluate all their effects without playing.

Playing ABattlemap you have to type all your moves - abbrevs. help.  Not sure you’ll like it or not.
But I don’t think we can really play these rules with Triple A until we have a final product and then can ask Triple A developers to make us this game….
Maybe Shin Ji can get you started on ABattlemap?  It does have its advantages, but is more labor-intensive.

It would be awesome if you started playing league games Shin Ji

Oh, I intend to start.  Hopefully in the next few days.  My wife’s computer just broke, so we’re sharing at the moment.

But yea, I’d be happy to help Noz get started in Abattlemap.  With luck, by the weekend.

  • Cool, man, I hope Noz is willing to try ABattlemap and try playing you

  • I am fine with that. So how does ABattlemap work. We need to setup all the pieces ourselves and what about other pieces like the medium ics etc.

  • '15

Abattlemap is essentially a picture of the map that allows us to move pieces around.  So we can just make a note in the text about things like the Medium ICs and whatnot.

  • Right - you’ll just have to play like there’s a medium in India, etc.  Just help each other remember stuff

It has never been tested, so I won’t be surprised if you see glaring problems.  I would have liked to have been the first to try it out but I don’t have time for awhile

It took a surprising amount of mucking about, but I found the files we’ll need to download to get Global40 in ABattlemap here:

    http://www.axisandallies.org/forums/index.php?topic=20043.0

I also found information on how to modify/create map files.  I may see if I can do anything with that if I’ve got time.

But man, looking at that program again reminds me why I never looked back after TripleA hit the scene.

Actually, I’ve got a better idea.  We can just play in TripleA with the liberal use of edit mode and occasional explanatory text.

    Here’s an example.

For my Ger1 purchase, I choose 1 Carrier and 2 Transports.  Under the usual unit costs, this would leave me with zero.  Instead, I just use Edit mode to add 2 PUs.

For the turn order, we can make that work too, though it’s clunky.  After Japan’s turn, you just skip right through the USA and China turns (using Edit mode to make sure their PUs don’t change) and do the UK turn.  After Italy, you skip through Germany, USSR, and Japan to get to USA and China.

I don’t think there’s a way to model the moving together as in AA50 thing, but I never played AA50, so I don’t even really know what the means anyway.

Not spending French income is straightforward enough.

Yea, I think this is doable in TripleA.

Should we have a bid, you think, Gamerman?

But if you do it this way, then basically each turn will take 2 turns. So turn 10 will actually be turn 5.

True.  It’s not perfect.  If I can figure out how to modify TripleA, that would be better, but it is what it is.
