On the subject of the Russian Sub

  • no… since the baltic fleet is dead anyhow, one might decide to attack sz6 with the SS + CA instead a fighter.

  • @Unknown:

Yeah, the NO only counts surface warships. Subs don’t count, sorry.

    Nevermind…

    I suppose that’s true.

  • I usuallu just sail around the world, call it The Red October and pretend Sean Connery is the Captain

  • I use it to threaten the italian fleet, not much of a threat I know but???
It can also be used in conjunction with your british/us fleet as cannon fodder!

  • Am I the only one who uses it as a harassment to the Japanese transport shuttles in the Indian and Pacific?

Ofcoursing, passing the Med is also annoying enough.

You don’t have to see it as a real force, more like a wasp threatening to sting. This way, it will still influence the game a little  8-)

Nope, I use it successfully against the Japanese as well.  Also, if you bring it into the med you can always use it in tandem with the Russian air force against the Italian fleet, you know, in those really, weird games where Russia A) has an airforce and B) can use it against the Italian fleet without weakening their attacks elsewhere.

  • in all seriousness I bring it through the panama canal and try to disrupt japanese transports in the south Pacific.

The Russian sub is an effective insurance policy.  It’s there to provide balance and interest.

It’s because if you play your cards right on GER 1 you can destroy on average all but 1 UK destroyer.  Depending on your results, germany can often end up with 2 or 3 subs spread out in the atlantic.  Only one of which your DST can attack with fighter support.  The Russian sub is a tool to keep the balance in the atlantic in favour of the allies, It’s there to insure that even if the allies roll 0 hits on their defense, you can still attack, or use it to soak hits if you build a brit navy.  However, if GER 1 does poorly against UK navy, or avoids it, the Russian sub is of more or less NO detrement to the germans.

So it’s a “Just in case” insurance policy.

I hate that damn Russian sub  :-)

In my current two games, I had the following disasters happen, inflicted by the russian sub:

    • The sub entered Indian Ocean, through Red Sea. Thus preventing me from running unescorted trannies in the south Asian waters, making it necessary for me to build several escort ships, solely for defense against that silly sub (my main fleet is off at US West coast to battle US Pac Fleet)

    • On G1 my 1ca 1 ss attacks NOR, and kills the UK DD w/o loss, only to be attacked by the ruskie sub - which promptly goes about sinking both my CA and my SS …

I’ve had it with that sub. I’ll re-write the russian setup chart next  :-)

  • Exactly, in 2 games recently already, the Russian sub has taken out both my German sub and the cruiser.  :-(

  • @Bardoly:

Correct me if I’m wrong: Subs can’t attack each other, because a sub can dive instead of rolling a dice, and both attacking and defending sub has first strike? So the definding sub could dive instead of rolling defending dice?

    You are correct sir.

It’s not correct that subs can’t attack each other.  It’s just that often, if there aren’t DDs in the mix, one side doesn’t want to and will submerge before any battle occurs. In the case mentioned, the defender could have submerged the sub, but chose to fight with it, probably intending to use it as fodder to protect the CA.

    You are right!
I forgot that subs can used as fodder, because of that 1’s on sub defending I regulary don’t use subs as fodder and have seen only sub meetings in my last games.

That’s exactly what I planned to do, because if the Russian sub hits my German sub, then my cruiser SHOULD be able to hit it back before being hit himself, but alas, it was not to be.

  • Imagine a round 3 situation:

Italy has its fleet in SZ 15, they maybe attacked Transjordan in round 2.
a clever move would be as UK - move your complete fleet to SZ 13, this fleet should be AC + 2 ftgrs, 2 Cruisers, 2 DDs and 1-2 subs. Yes, buy subs as UK if you want to kill that Italian fleet.

So that Italien fleet is trapped!
If they control Egypt and Trans Jordan, use your Inf from Persia and a Bomber to capture Transjordan, so the Italian fleet can’t escape via Suez canal.

So what can Italy do ?

    1. Attack - that’s suicidal, especially with 2 UK subs and that Russian sub in SZ 13 (russian sub moved to SZ 13 first, UK followed)

    2. leave - unfortunately they can’t ; SZ 16 is also 2 spaces away from SZ 13

    3. block - the best option.

This is a 2 step move:
First take ground units from Italy and recapture Transjordan
Build a DD in SZ 14 hoping to block UK fleet and use Suez canal next round.

    Next Round:

Now the Russian sub will have a use. Attack that newly build Italian DD with your sub and 1-2 fighters from Caucasus (you have to land all your Russian aircraft in Stalingrad or build new one there !!). SZ 14 is 2 spaces away from Caucasus, so that fighters can fly back in NCM safely.

It doesn’t matter if that sub survives, what matters is to destroy that DD - UK will move before  Italy and will destroy that fleet easily ! (use 2 subs and 1 DD plus aircraft, you will win with overwhelming odds - do not use your cruisers if not necessary, better attack France if possible but beware of German aircraft)
