Twas rather effective. But 40% odds of not losing a bomber from 5. Drops to 33% with 6. Damage with 5 survivors should be 27.5 (5.5 * 5) on average. So not that surprising a result.

Surely not. 5 dice means a 5/6 chance of a hit.

Maybe you’re right but my recollection of probability is:
Chance of not getting a hit on 1 dice = 5/6 = 0.8333333333
Chance of not getting a hit 5 times = 5/6 * 5/6 * 5/6 *5/6 * 5/6 = ~40%Chance of getting at least one hit = 1 - (Chance of not getting a hit when rolling a dice 5 times)
= ~60%I googled it before I posted just to make sure I hadn’t forgotten everything about my Mathematics degree and it confirmed my thinking. Permutations make it much more complex when considering ‘exactly one hit’, ‘exactly two hits’ etc. but ‘not getting a specific number when I roll a dice x times is very easy to work out’. P(a 6 in two rolls) = 1 - P(no 6 in two rolls)
P(no 6 in two rolls)= P(no 6 in first roll) * P(no 6 in second roll)
and P(no 6 in first roll) = P(no 6 in second roll) = 5/6
from there you get:
P(a 6 in two rolls) = 1-(5/6)^2
similarly for six rolls it will be 1-(5/6)^6Or alternative source:
I think you might be using the traditional A&A approximation of add up the hit points and divide by six, which looks a fair way off in this case. Again if I am right on all of the above. :-D

Should add (again if my maths memory persists) that the 5/6 is giving you the average number of hits, not the probability of getting a hit….
