[AE50] Grasshopper's AE50 House Rules

  • GRASSHOPPER’S AE50 VICTORY CONDITION
After 12 full game rounds in which there was no surrender, use the following point system to declare the winner:

Cities you control at the end of the game which were cities you controlled at the beginning of the game are worth 1 point each, cities you control at the end of the game which you didn’t control at the beginning of the game are worth 2 points each.

  • GRASSHOPPER’S AE50 CHINA RULES
During the Place New Units Phase of the United States turn, identify any originaly controlled Chinese territories that are controlled by Japan, but not occupied by any units. Control of these territories are reverted back to China at this time, and one free Chinese infantry unit is placed within each.

  • GRASSHOPPER’S AE50 DAMAGED BATTLESHIP RULE
Battleships are no longer repaired immediately after battle, instead… damaged Battleships may only be repaired during the Purchase New Units Phase, and only if adjacent to a friendly victory city or Industrial Complex.

  • GRASSHOPPER’S AE50 BOMBING RAID RULES
Attacking fighters may escort and protect bombers conducting bombing raids, and they can originate from any territory, range permitting. Also, any or all defending fighters based in a territory that is strategically bombed can participate in the defense of the industrial complex. The number of fighters that will defend is decided after the attacker’s Combat Movement Phase is completed and before the Resolve Combat Phase begins. Escort fighters have an attack value of 1, and interceptor fighters have a defense value of 2 (strategic bombers have no attack value).

This air combat triggered by interceptors lasts for only one round, and after the battle, any surviving strategic bombers may proceed to bomb the Industrial Complex. Defending interceptors must land in their original territory, if that territory is captured, the fighters may move one space to land in a friendly territory or on a friendly aircraft carrier. This movement occurs after all of the attacker’s combats have been resolved and before the attacker’s Noncombat Move phase begins. If no such landing space is available, the fighters are lost.

  • GRASSHOPPER’S AE50 NARROW STRAITS RULE
Dardanelles Closed to Sea Movement In order to maintain its neutrality, Turkey closed the narrow straits linking the Black Sea and the Mediterranean, permitting no naval passage by any belligerent nation on either side. No sea units may move into or out of sea zone 16, however air units may move through this sea zone freely.

    Where does AA fire?
As OOB AA50 SBR optional rule, against Fgs and Bombers before dogfight; or as 2nd Edition, only against surviving bombers?
    Damage as OOB, D6?

    Hey Young Grasshopper,

Can you say a few words about why you’re writing these house rules, who they’re for, or what you hope to accomplish with them? Hard to offer comments in a vacuum.

Because there are no neutral victory cities in Anniversary, I’m not sure your VP system changes anything beyond just counting up each victory city as one point. Any time I take a city, that means you lost a city, and vice versa. Normally, when I take a city, I gain +1 VP and you lose -1 VP, so the total VP swing per city is 2 points. Under your system, when I take a city, I gain +2 VP and you lose -1 VP, so the total VP swing per city is 3 points.

That’s it – you’re changing the swing from 2 points to 3 points, but it’s not like you can conquer half a victory city, so it really doesn’t matter if the swing per victory city is 2 points or 3 points or 50 points. I’m pretty sure it all works out the same in the end. No? I imagine you’re trying to reward players for being aggressive/proactive, but I don’t think your rule actually accomplishes that.

Also, to echo Baron Munchhausen’s concern, I don’t like the idea of allowing intercepts against bombers that only deal 1d6 damage, because then it virtually never makes sense to launch a bombing raid. It really doesn’t pay to launch more than 2 bombers against the same factory (you wind up wasting some of their power because the damage gets maxed out, but you still risk losing them to flak). So if I can defend my home factory with 2 or more fighters (really not that hard) then there is no point in bombing anything – between the 2 pips on the fighter and the 1 pip on the AAA gun, you have almost a 50% chance of losing your bomber on each run. 50% chance of dealing 3.5 damage vs. 50% chance of losing a 12 IPC bomber is a terrible trade-off. Sure, you could escort your bomber with fighters – but nobody in Anniversary has that kind of air power to spare. If you can spare 4 planes for a mediocre bombing raid, you should be using them to take territories. Just my two cents. If you’re going to import the interceptor rules, I’d like to see some kind of buff to the bombers.
