"Spammer" message is really F*@%ING annoying.

  • What is this all about?  Posting or quoting links seems to give some sort of BS spammer message.  The messages don’t show in the thread but can be seen in the topic summary if you hit reply.  It says something about a moderator needing to approve the message.  But that never happens, so what is the damned point of it, other than pissing off users?

I’ve been on the net since the mid '90’s and this is the first time I’ve ever had any posting anywhere labeled as spam.  If my tone seems harsh, I don’t apologize as this is a heavily toned down response to what I’m really thinking of this heavy handed approach.

  • You need more posts to get links. What type of link is it and for what?

Perhaps you can PM me and actually get something done.

Take a look at my posts to find several examples.  I don’t have that many, and they are all related to legitimate discussion topics.  My suggestion is don’t have a message saying a moderator will review the post before it is viewable if that is not a standard procedure.  I’m all for squashing actual spammers and giving mods the tools they need to do so.  To misquote the warnings on arrival in Singapore:  The death penalty for spammers!

The funny thing is, links worked on a few of my posts (to Larry Harris’ site.)  Yet when I quoted longterm patrons here, I got “spammer” messages.  When I tried to link to my own posts that included links that were not labeled spam, I got the spammer warning.  In my best General Zod voice:  I am not amused.

“You need more posts to get links.”  I understand what you are saying, but I see an awful lot of irony in the suggestion.  If I spam the boards with low content postings (often rightly considered spam in other forums) the spam warnings will eventually go away?  (I admit I considered and rejected this.)  Somehow I don’t think this is beneficial to anyone.

  • The message is for YOU to contact a Moderator. WE are not made aware of anything if you cant make a link.

This site used to be attacked with porno links/virus links and totally inappropriate posts and we got of them and this is the result. A few inconveniences are in order to stop the larger problem

That is not the message I recall.  Perhaps I’m mistaken on the warning or misread it, but it didn’t give instructions, just said that it had been flagged as spam and that a moderator would have to approve it before it was posted.  That is far different than a message saying,  “Flagged as potential spam.  Contact a moderator to get it posted.”

If the same script that is blocking the post with the link is not making you aware of it, then it is an ineffective one.  It would seem most logical to have it give a “heads up” to a moderator if there was spam potential in a post, so that the account could be killed.  Otherwise an actual spammer will eventually get the required post count and succeed.

Just contact a moderator to get the link posted. It says nothing to the effect that when you post a link and it is declined, somehow a moderator automatically knows exactly what happened without you telling anybody.

Instead of discussion how the script is written, perhaps you PM me so we can get the problem resolved?
