Go find a friend in Australia who is willing to look through old game lots over there. Or, search eBay on the regular. Other than that, I don’t know how or where.

    • RE: Avoiding Infantry blobs. Change their Cost to 3.2!

Another, even bolder way to avoid Infantry blobs - hard limits.

Let us build a system where infantry stats are the same, but a power can only have so many of them. I would think that using the same number for all powers would not work right, so different levels it is. The following numbers are just for example, using A&A 1942, 2nd Ed. In this case, I will take starting infantry and gave the allies x3 and the axis x2. This is most likely not the best system, just the one I came up with.

      USSR: 21x3=63
      Germ: 29x2=58
      Japan: 25x2=50
      Unit.K: 15x3=45
      USofA: 14x3=42

Whether this is better system or worse would need to be tested. But I think it would give that rare synergy between historically appropriate and game balancing.

    • RE: Painted pieces. Take a look!

@the-captain In the pictures you presented of your painting technique, I spy some old pieces - specifically, some of the old Table Tactics pieces - landing craft, jeeps, and land mines. Are those original or reproductions? If they are reproductions, how / where did you get them made? Or is this just an old picture?

I would dearly love to find a new source for those old pieces, now more than 20 years old…

@tjw0099 right on yea I’ve heard of it but never played it. I thought there was a thread for it here but … ? Lets ask @Midnight_Reaper he’s quite knowledgeable about all the games

I thank you for your confidence, but the computer A&A games are not my strong suite. Ask about the physical board games and I’m there, though.

Good luck getting your answers all the same.

      @superbattleshipyamato said in Underpowered Axis?:

      @black

I always hate having the Axis attack first, based on how things historically. They lost, didn’t they?

The Axis powers did lose. They also attacked first, gaining victories with surprise attacks and bravado. Of course, in the end, they bit off more than they could chew.

Having the Axis attack first is historical. Whether or not the end, where the Allies win, is historical is on the players.

@tank-buster said in Can aircraft make noncombat move thru friendly neutral if land units move into it on the same turn?:

I understand that land units (as explicitly stated in the rules) cannot move through a friendly neutral territory during a noncombat move, but does this include aircraft? If, for example, a UK tank makes a noncombat move from Persia (taken in previous turn) into Northwest Persia, could a UK fighter (based in Egypt) that just attacked Iraq in the combat phase make its noncombat move through N. Persia to land in Caucasus? Thanks.

      This move would be illegal.

      From the Axis & Allies Europe 1940 FAQ - September 3, 2014
      Q. Can I move air units into or through a friendly neutral territory during the same turn in which I move land units into it to claim it for my power?
      A. No. It doesn’t become your territory until the end of the Noncombat Move phase in which you move land units into it.

We have differing interpretations. We will need a ruling on the field. @Krieghund, yellow courtesy phone. Krieghund, yellow courtesy phone…

@tank-buster Since aircraft can move over hostile territory on both their combat and non-combat moves, I would say yes, you can do this.

Mind you, if the only reason you are taking this territory is to gain overflight rights, you need not bother - planes travelling on non-combat movement can move through hostile territory to get to a landing site. You just need to land somewhere that was friendly territory at the start of the turn.

    • New Axis & Allies games may become hard to find

Something to be aware of - it may become difficult to find any new A&A games for sale on store shelves. I’ve been asking around at different game shops. I wanted to know which A&A games can be ordered from central distributors. What I found was that, depending on who you ask, either only A&A Pacific 1940 (2nd Ed.) or no games at all are available from distributors.

I was then told that Hasbro has moved the Avalon Hill imprint from being a subsidiary of Wizards of the Coast to being a direct subsidiary of Hasbro itself. The store owner telling me this concluded that the A&A pipeline will shut down while Hasbro and/or Avalon Hill figure out what to do next.

This doesn’t mean that no copies of A&A are available for sale - just that as those copies at game stores are sold off, they won’t be replaced until this situation is resolved.

I don’t know just how much of the above is 100% correct. But I thought I would get the word out, so that my fellow forum members might know.

    • RE: Possible New A&A Game

I think you have some very interesting ideas and I can’t wait to see what comes of them.

Refighting WW2 by starting all the way back in 1919? That sounds cool. How are you going to stop the victorious Allied Powers from just picking up where they left off and steamrolling a defeated Germany and Austria?

      As for specific feedback…

On your planes (fighters, tac bombers, etc…) will you have early war and late war variants? The P-51 was a great fighter but wasn’t available in 1941. The P-40 was available at the time (and could hold its own when flown well) but was outdated by 1944. Since you could have war break out in 1935 or so, I would consider that.

As for the case of the French Strategic Bomber, I’ve always preferred the Farman F.220 and its descendants. It was a unique design and a four-engine bomber used in the strategic role in the early months of the war. HBG will sell you a 3D print of the F.222 model if you like:

    • RE: History of the Design?

@the-captain I think that @anikom15 is more interested in how the different A&A expansions from the 90s, in and of themselves, were balanced. I’m sure the answers vary from “not really” to “laughably unbalanced”, but I’m not an expert on the matter.

As you seem to have a background in those old expansions, what do you have to say about the game balance of, say, The World at War or WW2, The Expansion?

@anikom15 said in History of the Design?:

Apologies if this has been answered already or is in the wrong place, as this is my first topic.

A&A has been around a long time and I remember the days when there were various websites and forums dedicated to the game. Not sure how many of those are still around, but it got me thinking if anyone has attempted to document the history of the various editions and spin-offs of the game. I’m mainly interested in design/balance considerations.

If anyone has links to share, that would be very appreciated. I’ll continue looking around the internet myself and report back if I can find anything.

I am interested in hearing what you might have to say. I’ve a collection of A&A games, unofficial A&A game expansions, and a stack of similar-to-A&A games that might be used to expand your A&A play. The history of WWII fascinates me, and the history of A&A and its take on WWII fascinates me as well.

    • RE: Captured capitol player taking an enemy capitol

In this case, Germany would take Russia’s money. This would enable Germany to produce units next turn if it controls a factory somewhere. Mind you, Germany won’t go far on one turn of someone else’s production if it can’t retake Berlin - especially as the UK and the US will come gunning for Germany now.

      Clear, or clear as mud?

    • RE: Land Unit Adjustments

@adalwolf said in Land Unit Adjustments:

@rellhaiser I would say on a 10-12 All Calvary are forced to retreat during a battle, both attacker and defender, but no limit on purchases. They are not limited to 2. This gives them a little risk bringing them into battle.

The idea was that you could retreat one of your Cavalry / Armored Cars every turn you battled in that territory - this just gave you a way to have some units slip out from a losing battle. There’s nothing saying you couldn’t have a set of rules that allowed a player to retreat all of their Cavalry / Armored Cars any turn they liked - I just wrote a different set of rules. You do you.

    • RE: Land Unit Adjustments

Try giving your Armored Cars a retreat ability - so they can run when they’re under attack.

Cavalry Withdrawal: After one round of battle the Defender may withdraw one surviving Armored Car unit to any adjacent friendly territory. After the second round the Defender may withdraw a second Car unit to any adjacent territory (this can be a different territory from the first round). The Armored Car unit always gets its defensive shot in before it withdraws. If it withdraws it must do so before the Attacker starts the next round of battle.

I originally wrote up these rules for my variant rules for Classic A&A, available here.
