I did know the battle was coming, I just figured I had to get lucky 1 more time in order to really be back in the game.  Average results with Germany/Japan bearing down on the winning VC will only extend the game as long as it takes them to march to Egypt.  You played very well and earned a victory despite poor dice.  Congratulations, and good luck in 2014!
