The only occasion where you are permitted to retreat only some units is when the attack involves an amphibious assault (land units attacking from a transport can never retreat - all others still may).

Alright. I attacked with 1 inf and 1 mech from Anglo-Egyptian Sudan while 1 art and 1 inf were unloaded from a TT. I didnt score any hits during the first round. You scored 3 hits out of 3 possible. So, I decided I wanted to retreat, but I didnt really think the situation through because I thought I could retreat with the arty. Leaving the arty alive resulted in TripleA forcing the combat to contine. My attention was however to stop the combat and retreat with the sole survivor.
I would have retreated with the mech if I had known the arty could not retreat.
Either play on without the mech (you can just edit) or leave the mech in Anglo-Egyptian Sudan. If I wasnt allowed to retreat at all obviously we just remove the mech. It is not a big deal to me  :-)
