    You cannot attack SZ 125 with a submarine, you need a destroyer.  Thus, you did not get the NO for SZ 125 being clear of Axis warships.  Please correct Russia’s income.  I will place the German submarine back on the map.

    Please confirm before I do Japan’s turn.  Normally, I would just update the totals of what each nation has in the way of spendable cash, but you don’t check your totals or keep them updated.


  • Are you sure on the sub on sub? That is not my understanding.

    I think to attack a sub you can attack with any naval unit but need the destroyer to use airpower.

    What would work though for you (or any defending sub) is that without the destroyer the defending sub can submerge after the first round of combat. In that case if the Russian sub missed the first round the german sub could submerge and still deny the russians the 5NO income.

    However, in this case the russian sub hit on the first round before the german sub could submerge.

    Therefor I think my understanding is correct and the german sub is destroyed and the russians get the 5NO IPC.

    On keeping my income updated – I don’t use the board but I spell our where the IPCs come from in the forum and always state the expected income. I keep a running word document that shows all the moves, buys and collections I have each turn.

    Page 18 (Europe):

    Before the general sea battle takes place, both attacking and defending submarines can choose to either make a Surprise Strike die roll or submerge.

    Later on that page:

    Note: Decisions on whether attacking and defending submarines will fire or submerge must be made before any dice are rolled.

    Page 29 (Europe):

    Anti-sub Vessel: Destroyers are specially equipped for anti-submarine warfare.  As a result, they have the capability of cancelling… …Surprise Strike, Submersible and Can’t be hit by air units.

    Page 5 (AA Pacific 1940 FAQ_VER1.pdf):

    Q. Can a defending submarine submerge before an attacking submarine fires on it?
    A. Yes.  The decision wether to submerge is made before any dice are rolled, an the submerging submarines are removed from the battle immediately.  Of course, if the attacker has a destroyer, the defending submarines may not submerge at all.

    Essentially, I could choose to stand and fight when your submarine attacks, but there is no benefit to me in doing so.  Your submarine attacks at double the attack value that I do and there is risk I would lose and Russia would collect their National Objective.  Since the whole purpose of the submarine is to prevent Russia from collecting their National Objective, I choose to submerge prior to the first round of dice being thrown.

    Thus, Russia does not collect the National Objective for having SZ 125 clear of enemy warships (the German submarine is present in the sea zone).
