By the way, I bought your book!
It’s a very good read, and I’m almost done with it.
It’s definitely extremely brutal and tough.
Quick question:
Being a sapper, did you learn how to clear mines? I don’t think you mentioned that in the book, but I thought it was an important part of a sapper’s work.

Ah, very cool and thanks! We were trained on identification but not defusing or setting. I believe the primary intent of the course was to create conditions as near to those experienced in war and then to train the mind and body to endure them. Most of the training was on rope work, rappelling/climbing and explosives. I believe mines is taught at a future school. Though I requested to be an officer of Engineers after graduating the course, the “needs of the Army” later deemed I would be an Ordnance officer so I never did learn much about setting or defusing. I do remember a lot about our mines and the mines of our enemies. The Soviets employed a few that were just awful. One was the “butterfly mine” designed to look like a children’s toy. The Russians would throw these things out the back of helicopters in the 80s Afghan war. Kids would pick them up and have their fingers and hands blown off. The intent was to force the fathers to go home and stop fighting and also to sew terror. Just nuts… mines are a very interesting and terrifying weapon - especially with how many variations and intents. Many are not designed to kill but to maim for example - a dead soldier is one soldier down. A wounded soldier ties down a LOT of resources including extra soldiers.

Thank you for sharing the additional clarification about what Sapper School was about.
Too bad you didn’t become an engineer. Ordnance officer, given your training, seems to suit you well.
Yeah, mines are very crazy. I did not know about those Soviet mines you talked about. Thank you for sharing. :+1:
Yeah, wounded soldiers are often more detrimental than dead soldiers.
Think I heard one medieval war or something when one side, instead of killing 100 POWs, blinded 99 of them and blinded 1 eye of the last guy, who was tasked with leading them home.
All those blind men heavily tied down resources.
