You’re right about the dice - economically we’re probably pretty even in the luck department, which is good.
I’m eager to see how you’ll assault Russia… you’re doing a nice job making the UK miserable in Egypt… makes it harder to help my Commie ‘friends’.

I think the crazy rolls you got in the Channel on G1 probably has a lot to do with the current state of affairs in Africa. It’s interesting how much of a razor’s edge it is in Africa – I think because there aren’t very many units that fortunes are more fluid.
Sometimes it feels like Italy is one turn and one piece short all the time. I think the battle in the Channel, coupled with the necessity to plan for a G3 Sealion, handcuffed what could be done with the RAF. Just one naval unit difference in the Med sometimes swings the balance of power.
Out of all the reasons to play Germany with the carrier/2TR buy G1, I think more than anything it helps Italy to grow up a little bit. If you can get 1 or 2 NO’s I1, Italy actually can be playable. But without the UK worried about the home isles in round 1, say goodbye to Italy’s navy and hello to an IC in Egypt. If I saw an artillery-heavy buy with no navy on G1, I’d think I had the game won as the Allies. As it is, most of the time UK can forget about an invasion as early as their purchasing phase of turn 2. Just being able to make Sauron’s eye look elsewhere for a single turn is essential, I feel.

Great point re: RAF choices - I needed every single available plane to knock out the Kriegsmarine, and it took away my usual aggression against the Italian fleet… which then also leads to more air power for the UK in the Med, and therefore Africa, eventually. So, we could see the SZ91 battle as the sacrifice Germany made to make Italy a stronger presence in the Med - it has played out that way. Action - reaction; cause - effect. Every choice has a consequence! Great stuff.

A rookie mistake, after this many games in unforgiveable for this player. I saw everything, but somehow underestimated the aircraft that could make it to India… a strange oversight on my part.

The two things that made it possible were holding Yunnan, where you got some highly variable dice, and dropping the airbase on Kwangsi. Otherwise I don’t have a landing spot without a J2 DOW and a Shan State capture (or alternatively the J3 DOW with the J4 move on Calcutta - which costs me about 50% more planes and I net like 7 IPCs in plunder after the J3 captures and convoy raids).
I don’t take it if it’s not there, but I always prepare for it just in case. I figure the units have other legitimate uses, unlike the guy the buys 10 transports G2 only to figure out he can’t Sealion and then tries to justify the expense by claiming that Archangel is just as legitimate and lucrative a target…
allweneedislove caught me napping without a DD blocker and nuked the 2nd carrier group off Malaya. I’ll not be making that mistake again with UK’s navy sitting off Ceylon…

No worries; the lull gave me a chance to see if I could pull victory from the jaws of defeat on another game where I had lost the Kreigsmarine and had to keep burning the Luftwaffe trying to keep the Royal Navy at bay all game long, ended up having to go 2 rounds too early against the Soviets at Moscow, even though I held Cairo, because I was about to lose Paris and Rome. Yeah, that didn’t work out. I think if I could hit in round 1 with like 90% of my infantry and artillery, I’d have had like a 25% of victory in Moscow. Kind of like needing a 6 of diamonds on the turn and a 9 of diamonds on the river to suck out… I also screwed up that destroyer block which made me go 1 round too late on Calcutta, more resources diverted for 1 round for Japan and a tiny IPC haul. I did learn a very important piece of information about bid placement, though!
