Yeah a silly position gaff by me. I knew I made the NCMs wrong the first round here. Being one of my early games, the first against the G1 I believe, it doesn’t bother me. I’m much more aware now what has to be done.
GG, you get the cheap win here- thanks for showing me the gambit- first time through actually.
Yes the G1/J1 is playable, not that impressed though, I still like G2 for Germany better. J1 is very good for Japan, though I think J2 is equally as good and might be better in the long run.
What I’ve learned through the whole round 1-2 Axis gambit games:
It is beatable.
Taranto is almost a necessity, although Tobruk is not bad, Taranto is more refined and better in the long run.
18inf, 2AA I think are best going to Moscow, though in our other game, I’m interested to see what happens. You seems to be running out of gas there and I’ll have 14 planes on Moscow. However, I do miss the 18inf there also.
IC on Egypt is also a must on round 1 it seems.Allied strategy seems to just invest hard in the Pacific with US, advance in South Pacific and make sure Hawaii and ANZAC are stable. After round 3 its all Europe. UK builds IC in Egypt right from the get go and holds fast. Russia- depending on when Germany attacks turtles and consolidates, move 18inf to Moscow, UK sends planes if needed through Scotland or through US/UK send planes through Egypt, which is easier I think.
With proper play against the G1/J1, India should fall no earlier that round 4, round 5 if things don’t go Japan’s way. Since Japan goes quickly to India on a J1 gambit so fast, the Pacific is really not a threat and US can really invest earlier on the Europe side and start bringing the heat to Gib and shuck major air to Egypt then Moscow if needed.
If Taranto is done, by the time India falls, Italy is neutered and Paris/Rome are in danger, Cairo is a fortress and Moscow is impenentrable. US is cherry picking the DEI and neglected Japanese tts.
So basically Japan is going all-out for the Europe win on a J1, sending airforce to Europe and taking India. In exchange however, you give up Cairo, the Med, the Pacific and probably either Rome or Paris AND you may never actually take down Moscow. After round 10 the game becomes a slow death crawl for the Axis as Allies regain naval superiority tip back the scales economically.
For all the hype these gambits are getting, I’m afraid they are nothing more than a fad. Several players are coming up with good counters already. I’ve seen lots of countering moves that have a lot of good play for the Allies. Not all of them are mentioned here but basically Allies can weather the storm and win.
Based on the 2 polls done with online players (100+ voters). Several believe that the game is slightly Allied favored or even. This was surprising to me, b/c all I heard was how the Axis are dominating with these new gambits. Sure you get a few cheap wins, but after everyone has seen the gambits 3-4 times, they don’t become as threatening anymore and the Axis wins (if any) become much harder to come by.
I really think in 3-6 months everyone will be saying how the Allies really have the advantage in this game.

Call me crazy, but I really believe Urban will have a tough time at OHIO. Just a gut feeling. Hope I’m wrong actually.
