Hey David,
The allies surrender, except USA that is making good $$, the rest is all crumbling… I didn’t play well at the beginning, with UK pac, I thought you would try something with Japan and I didn’t prepare well!
The key battle, got diced in Burma real good !
Well done my friend! Looking forward for the rematch :-D
Cheers,
Dominic.
Here’s my feedback…maybe a little too long winded.
First of all: Why don’t you want to follow up the attack with the UK at Burma for clean up? UK Pacific is going to collect Borneo money and there are no Japanese transports nearby.
4/9 hits 1st roll isn’t very good (should have been 1-2 more hits. I wonder how much that would have changed the outcome of the game). My roll of 7/15 may have been a little above or right at fair dice due to the composition. I think that your 9 bomber attack was like a Hail Mary and wasn’t necessarily required. Did you consider flying your US carrier based planes (SZ 45) to Calcutta? I thought you were going to do that. That then puts them in range for other options like going to middle east / Cairo or remaining in place. You could then buy more fighters to refill your carriers since the Japanese fleet was out of position back at SZ 6. I was forced to consolidate up north or die; but mainly my intent next round was to force the Russian Siberians to retreat or die in place.
The UK plane attack against my fleet in SZ37 was a good opportunity but too risky IMHO. I think the UK Pacific needs 2 planes the entire game in order to fight back for key territories like Burma without having to use significantly more ground. I would never have done that attack. But I will suicide a US fleet (around 20-35% chances of win) when ANZAC has the chance to clean up. Those UK planes were bound to die in that sea battle practically no matter what.
In my opinion the game changer battle(s) of the game was taking out the UK fighters in Cairo. Both Italy and the UK got pretty good dice (Italy’s was better than it should have been which made a huge difference for Germany to clean up). The UK in turn also didn’t roll very well against Germany. The UK should have gotten 2 more hits which would have killed a fighter and prevented Germany from getting another 7 IPCs. (I’m not sure if that would have made a difference for Moscow or not).
Tobruk vs Taranto: I’d rather the allies do Tobruk over Taranto any game. In fact I won’t even land a fighter in Tobruk to try to persuade the UK into not doing it. It’s easier for Italy to get the 5 IPC objective for no enemy surface warships if the US is going KJF. I found that there was no need for a carrier. I almost bought one and maybe would have this turn, but every other turn I always saw no need. The Italian battleship w/ 2 transports gives way more options which slows down the extremely critical UK role of sending fighters to Moscow when the US goes for KJF. The Tobruk stack can only go 2 ways and once it’d dead, that’s it. Italy could get Cairo if Germany suicides it’s air force, but then Moscow might be safe as a result. I think it’s difficult for the UK to get to stabilize the middle east/Cairo in any situation, but LESS so when it’s the result of the Italian Tobruk forces. In this game, the Axis would have gotten Cairo pretty quick following Moscow/Stalingrad capture.
If you had done a Burma stack on UK1 (like you used to), I would have suicided my planes and went as hard as possible for India. I promise you I won’t pass up that opportunity because I know you’re coming for Japan’s throat. India / w. India / Burma +5 IPC bonus is worth 11 IPCs to Japan and it knocks out an allied capital. It also has a naval base which gives other options.
I did the follow up attack with UK pacific, got crushed, you can easily take India now, That’s why I surrender!
I knew you were going to sacrifice all your planes for Burma, so that’s why I tried to change my strat, but I think it’s better that you sacrifice some of your planes to really give me a chance to succeed in Pacific in KJF. Even if you took India, I would be able to bring pressure with USA or even take it back with UK, to force Japan to choose.
I tried something different there and it didn’t work + you are right, Tobruk is a bad idea, the reason why I did it, is because you bought 2 bombers and was worried you might do a full Egypt first!
Sorry, I missed the UK dice results for the following UK to Burma attack. Yeah, the UK definitely got diced awful bad. I understand you calling the game after those results.
Sometimes the Burma strafe could be super deadly for Japan; good point there. It could also help China become a local power; Japan’s air can’t hit everything.
I might still buy 2 bombers again G1. They’re very useful in the beginning for several different directions. I once had a successful Sea Lion game with them against akaroadman (triplea live game)…partly because I had a lucky bombing raid in which 0/4 bombers were shot down and the factory was totaled.
I was skeptical at first with 2 bombers+ 1 sub at G1, but now you have so many options with Ger and control the game early on! You can attack any witnesses the allies left and UK cannot defend everything!
