• @Jennifer:

On a personal note: I prefer a dog to a gun. A good german shepard will tear the ever living crap out of an intruder and won’t accidentally hit a family member comming home late. Besides, you can play with a doggie, playing with a gun is just irresponsible.

Ya, but when your well trained, much loved dog dies by getting shot by the same intruder….you will rethink your choice…

  • '18 '17 '16 '11 Moderator

CC: That’s just it. You dont have to train the dog to kill, not if you trained it to love you. It’ll do it just to protect you.

Also, I’m quite certain that there are many, maybe a million?, people that think Pres. Bush is worse then Hitler. So?

And yes, there have been many massacres with knives. One that pops out really fast is the Crusades where hundreds of thousands were slaughted at knife point (sword/knife same thing only bigger).

How about 9/11? That was all done with box cutters.

Lotsa wacko kids playing D&D with fantasy swords they bought and sharpened. I’m sure you could do a helluva good job killin classmates with a 2 handed sword, even if you are untrained.

Yes Mr. G. doggies arnt perfect either. I have two pistols in the house which are loaded w/o locks and the dog. I figure the dog should keep the intruder busy enough for me to get to the pistols and pump him with about 30 rounds of .45 ammunition. Figure if he’s dead he can’t sue - right?

Still want the .50 cal browning though. Betcha it would keep the cops up at night knowin the next house they kick the door down in could have one of those babies sitting on a tripod just inside!

better yet…Set up a sandbag-bunker on your front lawn…draw a wide yellow line…and put up a sign saying “Enter at own risk”…you could sit in that bunker, in a lawn chair…sippin lemonade all day…wait…what the hell am I talking about??? Jen, your personality is rubbing off on me :o

Humor doesn’t seem to work well online…pout.

I was being a bit sarcastic (slight bit of truth, mostly humor though) with the machine gun and the unsightly barbed wire.

  • No weapon I could own would protect me from the government if it wanted me dead. Certainly not my shotgun. Get real. Our army has Tanks. Stealth Fighters… Not that they would need them. Nope sorry. What protects me is information. An informed military and citzenry IS freedom. Power without information is a perfect tool for the next generation of dictator. Freedom of the press IS the United States. When a government starts vilifying the press start worrying. Can anyone say “Liberal Media”? Your being worked.

  • '19 Moderator

Well, I wasn’t there, but I can imagine there were quite a few people in 1770 that were saying “Get real, the British have cannons, rockets, friggates and trained horse cavalry, we could never beat that!”

  • rockets? :-?

lizard is right…at the individual level, being armed will do nothing if the govt wants you dead. being intelligent, informed, and educated will protect you better.
an armed populace, however, can overthrow a military. thats why dictatorial regimes dont allow gun ownership, its not prudent to have an armed populace if they dont like you.

i dont think that means it should be unrestricted, we dont want people running around with SAWs, LAWs, grenades, mortars, etc. even handguns are debateable, since they are the weapons most linked to, and easiest to use in criminal activity.

there should certainly be restrictions on what you can own, and not everyone should be eligible (i.e., children, mentally ill/challenged should not be able to own weapons)

    thats my two cents

  • @Janus1:

    rockets? :-?

this was a MAGICAL British army. You see, the real fear was their available to TIME TRAVEL!!!

  • I’m no revolutionary war expert and not that it matters, however……I do belive Britain starting experimenting with rockets during the Napoleonic wars sometime after or around 1810.

…just wanting to post something here really…sick.

  • sorry double post

Didnt know you could delete posts. /shrug

    Back on topic:

Exactly right. An armed and informed populace is all that holds a government back from becoming tyranical. Once you disarm the public and feed them “yellow journalism” you cease to have the problem and can begin to strip freedoms and privaleges away from them.

You see, we do NOT have the RIGHT to life, liberty or the persuit of happiness. We have the privalege to live as long as we can prevent others from stripping our lives from us. We have the privalege to act as we please provided we have the ability to stop others from inhibiting us. And you can persue happiness to your hearts content, you can just be prohibited from attaining happiness.

The only right you are endowed with at birth, from your creator or not, is your right to inhibit the world’s ability to restrict your wants and desires to the best of your individual ability.

Now, in America, we have formed a codification of privaleges that we grant our citizens. These privaleges are protect by law until such time as we are unable to prevent others from stripping those privaleges away from us.

Point in fact, an infant’s right to life is inhibited by the mother’s privalege to choose. (For most religious persons and many non-religious persons, life begins at conception, not birth.) So what happened to that little person’s right to life? Well, s/he was unable to protest in court and thus his or her opinions were nullified and s/he was stripped of that “right.”

What about liberty? Well, if you sit in a bell tower and kill 38 people with a hunting rifle (assuming you get to court) you will not have liberty anymore because the government will strip you of those privaleges. Thus, liberty is not a RIGHT, but a privalege.

BTW, it isn’t Britian we need to worry about. Canada’s the one with all their citizens and militia massing on our northern border! I’m tellin ya the Ka-Nooks are gunna attack and we arnt going to be ready for it! They’ve been bidding their time, eh!

I already have my next profession in mind. I’m going to replace the period on typewriters with a little ‘eh’ key! I’ll be a billionaire in no time, though it’ll be Canadian money and thus not worth as much as American dollars….wink

Sorry dezrtfish, I just assumed that you were referring to the Revolutionary war. The British could very well have use rockets during the war of 1812.

Is that were that line comes from “rockets red glare”? A british rocket attack during the war of 1812 :D …

and CC I will give you a call soon……I didn’t notice a delete post option, but, I’m at work and there are calls coming in every other second…crazy…

Is that were that line comes from “rockets red glare”? A british rocket attack during the war of 1812 :D .

I was, I got my wars mixed up…

    Just to clear the air:

All through the 13th to the 18th Century there were reports of many rocket experiments. For example, Joanes de Fontana of Italy designed a surface-running rocket-powered torpedo for setting enemy ships on fire. In 1650, a Polish artillery expert, Kazimierz Siemienowicz, published a series of drawings for a staged rocket. In 1696, Robert Anderson, an Englishman, published a two-part treatise on how to make rocket molds, prepare the propellants, and perform the calculations.

During the early introduction of rockets to Europe, they were used only as weapons. Enemy troops in India repulsed the British with rockets. Later in Britain, Sir William Congreve developed a rocket that could fire to about 9,000 feet. The British fired Congreve rockets against the United States in the War of 1812. Francis Scott Key coined the phrase the "rocket’s red glare after the British fired Congreve rockets against the United States. William Congreve’s incendiary rocket used black powder, an iron case, and a 16-foot guide stick. Congreve had used a 16-foot guidestick to help stabilize his rocket. William Hale, another British inventor, invented the stickless rocket in 1846. The U.S. army used the Hale rocket more than 100 years ago in the war with Mexico. Rockets were also used to a limited extent in the Civil War.

  • Rockets existed in a simple form since argueably 1 AD in China.
    http://inventors.about.com/library/inventors/blrockethistory.htm#chinese
“The date reporting the first use of true rockets was in 1232.”

Regardless, we won the war because there is an Ocean between us and England and they had the French to worry about. Not to take anything from our men, they where insanly brave. Just pointing out a fact.
Our best defence is keeping out military rooted in civilian life. As long as they are rooted in the same society as we are they will be far less inclined to become tools of a dictator.

  • No weapon I could own would protect me from the government if it wanted me dead. Certainly not my shotgun. Get real. Our army has Tanks. Stealth Fighters…

I agree LB. On the other hand, I’m trusting some of those who serve and took the oath to remember their oath is to the Constitution if the worst comes to pass. In other words, in the case of civil insurrection/civil war I expect an armed populace will be important as the military splits up and forms factions which end up heading the groups fighting the civil war.

In other words, when the shit really hits the fan there won’t be enough fancy/advanced weaponry to go around, being able to mobilize a few thousand people and arm them with rifles might be enough to control a territory…
