    • RE: All IC's unlimited?

      @ncscswitch:

      All IC’s limitted would be a VERY interesting game!  Would force Allies to spread out a bit, and would also put something other than INF on the board in Europe.

      Unlimitted IC’s makes it so the Axis doesn;t ahve a prayer, period.  Just put a UK tank factory in Persia and a US tank factory in Sinkiang… game over for the Axis.

      I agree wholeheartedly, if the US and UK put up an Asian Wall strategy with unlimited factories they could easily knock Japan off the mainland quickly. It wouldn’t help Germany or Russia really but once Finland/Norway fell, assuming it was either the US or UK…

      This would kill the Axis

    • Best Allied strategy

      Hi all,

      I just wanted to get everyone’s opinion about the best Allied strategy. The poll question is somewhat limited to the physical board game though, the factory limitation doesn’t exist in any pc based version I’ve ever played. I’ve found this to be a very good strategy because it slows Japan down (they’ll only be able to place 1 factory in Asia). Given Japan’s limited finances early on, and the counterattacks this makes possible in every game I’ve seen it used in the Allies are able to effectively gang up on Germany and knock them out before Japan has been able to advance down and take out the factories in India and Sinkiang. It also had the added benefit of slowing their advance into Russian territory, which allowed Russia to build up more than it might otherwise have been able.

      Anyhow, I’m just curious where this falls into everyone’s ‘list’ of best Allied moves? Is it a top 10, top 5, top 3, useless, etc.

    • RE: Ultimate Axis strategy

      @El:

      kyri,
      I agree.  G buys most inf(maybe the C Med trn), with the occassional arm if ya got 2 additional IPCs. The arm G starts with should be good for 2-3 attacks so no need to go ARM HEAVY. Inf fodder needed with arm support so that if you have to lose it you don’t lose the ftrs(more flexible)!

      Glad to see some more rational discussion. Taking out Russia in two turns - or 3 is not going to happen against a halfway decent player. Concentrating everything on Karelia leaves the Atlantic so open that the US and UK and start the shuck shuck by Round 3.

      I think the best Germ option is to buy 9 inf and 1 arm on G1, and stick with roughly that purchase plan until it’s certain a knockout blow has been prepared for the USSR. In the meantime, hopefully Japan is making headway in Asia and can start to carve up Russian territory. However, if the Allies employ the Asian Wall strategy in conjunction with the purchase of all factory units (board limit) then this may take awhile. What’s nice about a heavy inf mix is that if the Axis is forced into a Fortress Europe strategy they’ve already got a lot of defensive units (though that’s normally a slow death plan).

    • RE: USA Glitch?

      @Minus:

      Yes…it is an old version.

      I guess I need to shop around for an updated version.

      Thanks

      There’s a patch which addresses the AI tendency to buy subs. You’ll have to hunt for it but it’s out there.

      If you can get a copy of Iron Blitz cheap it may be worth your time. The AI isn’t really any better than Hasbro but at least there are interesting scenarios to play thru.

    • RE: Las Vegas

      Glad to hear you liked the idea.

      I don’t think fundraising is the way to go. I think you’d have to charge an outright registration fee for this. My basic idea would be to try and arrange a deal with a smaller hotel in Vegas and everyone interested registers for the event. Registration would cover the cost of their room, admission to the tourney, etc. Then tack a few bucks on for prize money, gifts, awards, whatever it was decided to give the winner.

    • RE: Some new rules for civility

      @Janus1:

      yes, what constitutes an insult? because what if i say something insulting to someone, as a joke, and they got it, but you didnt?

      That was my point Janus. That’s why I said I would hope they’ll error on the side of caution and let ‘borderline’ stuff go. Generally it’s too subjective to be judged accurately, especially individual comments.

    • RE: Some new rules for civility

      Jeez, I go on vacation and come back and the world changes :) It’s really pretty sad that a step like this is necessary. It may be hard at times to judge intent though, so I hope this is something done with a large degree of ‘safe side’ meaning erring on the side of the person who is doing the insulting, etc. Some stuff is pretty clear, but bad humor taken out of context could fall into this category.

      Do you have an appeals process in mind for those who didn’t think they were being insulting/abusive, etc?

    • RE: Whats the most important thing about playing?

      For me I won’t enjoy the game unless it’s competitive so those options are one and the same. Also, if it’s a competitive game I should learn something I can use later. All of that makes the game interesting, and therefore fun to me.

      I think I’d have to put Alexander not dying near the top of the list. Then he could have come back and conquered Northern Europe…
