Stalingradski (Allies) vs. Fortress (Axis) - G40


  • I wussed out on Sealion. I saved the spot in the game so I could take a look at it later. Any battle that can be swung SO severely by AA guns isn’t one to undertake lightly. It almost couldn’t have worked out more favorably, with few Luftwaffe losses G1. I guess it kind of came down to this: I can play Sealion “any” time I get those circumstances – testing out the offensive (that you authored) against you when you know its coming is a much more fun and useful way to spend my time, though :)


  • I like your attitude! I’ve actually never faced a real Sealion… and I’m much more interested in a full-bore Barbarossa as well…

    Although my purchase last round reflected a need to hurt Germany in the event of Sealion… so your propaganda worked!  :-)


  • I guess that’s really part of an effective strategy. A feint is only useful if your opponent can see you’ve got the cards – you can do the carrier/2 TR buy, but if all of your tanks are in Greece at the end of G2 and what’s left of your navy is fishing pilots out of the Channel, you don’t really scare anybody…

    And, yes, looking out across the steppes of eastern Europe at that pile of men and material certainly makes even 100% Sealion odds be something you might not want to take.

    I’d love to try a three-sided variant some day where the Soviets are an ally only inasmuch as they share a common enemy. They get their own victory conditions. The US and UK let them take the brunt of Germany’s attack and only draw Germany away when it’s closing in on Moscow - otherwise if they turn Germany to face the coast sooner, Red tanks roll into Berlin before the English speakers get there…

  • Well, a Chinese debacle - a 76% victory with 2 infantry and a fighter left = four dead infantry for me and no hits on your mighty Yunnan defensive force. Also lost out on an extra 7 IPCs, plus major momentum gained for you.

    On the flip side, SZ91 went my way - I should have won with only a bomber left, but ended up with two extra fighters. Japan ascends, Germany has a foe with teeth.


  • I think it evened out. That 58% battle in z91 was a bloodbath. Bookmark this moment as Britian’s proudest moment. A game-changer in the Atlantic. It’s funny how things work out. I don’t know if you saw this, but…

    If that battle was just a tiny bit on my side - like if I survive with a damaged carrier - then I capture Washington DC G3 (I literally formed that plan during G2 combat move, hence the modified can-opener wuth the sub to noncom them down there). The Italian Transport captures SE Mexico on I2, and the Italians build an Airbase on Gibraltar I2. The German Bombers can now take part in the battle over DC. The carrier gets repaired at the beginning of G3. The German F and Tac on Gibraltar can reach the amphib to provide cover in case of scramble.

    And then the dice evened us back out (ish). What a thrilling back and forth turn of events… Yeah, holding Yunnan is one of those moments that the Japanese player counts moves to and from and that the Allied player curses.

    Wow. This game now has its personality!


  • No, I didn’t see it sir - nice gambit, and it was the skinniest of battles to begin with… I felt comfortable with the forces in Eastern US… not factoring in the Italian airbase! That would have shocked me.

    Time will tell who got the better of the luck in that turn… in the big picture, it really evened out… if both had gone my way, or both yours, this might have been too short a game.

    You’re right… this game has just become unique, and we’ve entered unknown territory.


  • I’m comfortable with the way the dice have gone - you’re right about time telling. Is the Fighters to Guiana a tactic that playing Infrastructure showed you? That’s a new one on me (and I didn’t see it – I figured if you wanted to attack you’d have to land in Morocco or French West Africa). Clever.

    The fighters in S America were unplanned - I didn’t expect any to be alive. I planned to land any lucky survivors in F W Africa, and then expected them to die the next round.

    Then I looked around…

    … and they were still threatened by your Italian fleet, so I had to sacrifice a transport to make sure they lived. They are a lucky resource for me to have in the Atlantic.

    You’re right about the dice - economically we’re probably pretty even in the luck department, which is good.

    I’m eager to see how you’ll assault Russia… you’re doing a nice job making the UK miserable in Egypt… makes it harder to help my Commie ‘friends’.


  • I think the crazy rolls you got in the Channel on G1 probably has a lot to do with the current state of affairs in Africa. It’s interesting how much of a razor’s edge it is in Africa – I think because there aren’t very many units that fortunes are more fluid.

    Sometimes it feels like Italy is one turn and one piece short all the time. I think the battle in the Channel, coupled with the necessity to plan for a G3 Sealion, handcuffed what could be done with the RAF. Just one naval unit difference in the Med sometimes swings the balance of power.

    Out of all the reasons to play Germany with the carrier/2TR buy G1, I think more than anything it helps Italy to grow up a little bit. If you can get 1 or 2 NO’s I1, Italy actually can be playable. But without the UK worried about the home isles in round 1, say goodbye to Italy’s navy and hello to an IC in Egypt. If I saw an artillery-heavy buy with no navy on G1, I’d think I had the game won as the Allies. As it is, most of the time UK can forget about an invasion as early as their purchasing phase of turn 2. Just being able to make Sauron’s eye look elsewhere for a single turn is essential, I feel.


  • Great point re: RAF choices - I needed every single available plane to knock out the Kriegsmarine, and it took away my usual aggression against the Italian fleet… which then also leads to more air power for the UK in the Med, and therefore Africa, eventually. So, we could see the SZ91 battle as the sacrifice Germany made to make Italy a stronger presence in the Med - it has played out that way. Action - reaction; cause - effect. Every choice has a consequence! Great stuff.

    Nice reference to the Eye of Sauron… today at work, as I spoke to an unwitting co-worker, I (without meaning to) made the Sean Bean Eye of Sauron gesture (around 14 seconds in the clip below) when I was speaking about looking into the future for some of our management choices…  :evil:
