No problem on the Karelia deal… I thought it strange that you would take the fleet out there… just seemed odd.
And yeah, the strat definitely is easier and better for the Axis early. I figure once the US really gets involved, then you’ll see the Allies start, but not for a bit since you attacked round 1.
Not sure how you are feeling about things, but I really like the aggressive German opening against Russia (the bear has no time to build and group up…) with an economic campaign against the UK. You now have 4 strats buying more fighters is going to cost a fortune for the UK! Very interesting… enjoying the game a bunch.
I hopefully will have time for Russia tonight. Got a busy few weeks ahead of me…

yeah, I’d say I’m ambivalent towards the G1 Barbarossa. G1 and J1 attacks are beneficial because the moment you give the allies even one single turn to get their houses in order, a lot of opportunities are lost (e.g. killing Russkies before they have stacked; smashing the Malaya BB on J1, although that’s something I didn’t do this game).
I got unlucky in my intial attack on NUk (with pure air), then very lucky when you countered on BESS, so I’m not sure if how things look right now is how they should look. But you’ve been playing properly; making lots of land buys and avoiding paying off any damage, plus I think with a little more foresight, Germany can do this and consistently rob Russia of her bonus… so if it looks like this or better for Germany, then yeah, perhaps this is the way to go.
A J1 attack is standard strategy for me; something I would do if my life depended on winning. That’s the thing with this game: On the one hand, you can’t help but take it seriously (with all the time, planning, etc.); on the other hand, it gets boring pretty fast using these boilerplate strategies. I like to be creative in one theatre and standard in the other as the axis.
All in all, it seems my big mistake was taking Queensland, as it indeed looks as if holding NSW will be a problem. Diverting that much attention from India and the money islands isn’t worth is for only one quick looting of ANZAC. Typically, I like to fake the Sydney invasion whilst smashing that navy, and then swoop in hard on Calcutta, but again… who wants to be typical?
-
Hey J,
Sorry for the delay… been swamped with work and social events! :-D
I like your thoughts on your turn 1 moves. I’m not so sure that the ANZAC move is going to pay off either… definitely slows down the Allies in the Pacific a bunch, which is good, but like you said, probably better areas to go after for IPCs…
The game is a series of choices. I think that as the Allies, I must MAKE the Axis make choices on which way to go every turn. This or that, do not allow the Axis to continue with their straight forward strategies or the Allies will continue to be dictated on where the fight is.
With that thought in mind, Russia 3
