Canadian Infantrymen
A SMLE that's 1940 instead of 1941. Makes the already obsolete SMLE even more so.

The Russians are very interesting as a faction. They almost have at least one of everything; heavy medium and light tanks, artillery, cavalry, an assortment of infantry, and two commanders with great command abilities. About the only noticeable units they don't have are AA and Machine-Gun teams. Most of the Russian tanks are generically good; decent AT, AI, and all around defence. A few have transport, and about most of them have superior armour or hulking mass, making them quite sturdy vehicles. One of the greatest thrills of playing the Russians is sending your hordes of infantry and armour slamming into the opponent.

The American army provides us with a wide variety of generally aggresively costed units; the M4A1 and Mustang are prime examples. Their army list provides a lot of units with interesting combat abilities;covering fire pinpointer, veteran crew, flamethrower, hard charger, etc. In fact with the Americans they often have so much that it's hard to decide what to work with.

The British provide us with an interesting mix of units. Before 1944 most of their tanks are undergunned and fairly ineffective against infantry (the M3 Stuart being a notable exception). However, they have quite a few staple AI units, including the tournament-worthy Humber Scout Car. With their units the British seam to emphasize an infantry army supported by heavier tanks, though other forces will work quite well. In earlier games many of the British units are quite tough (Valentine II), fast (Crusader II) or useful for a variety of purposes (Bofors, Humber, etc). With the late war tanks Britain finally has some units with a punch, and although they still suffer against infantry, it has been lessened somewhat. An important aspect of British armies I've found is their mobility; whether it's moving your normally immobile artillery during the movement phase, all of the Vanguard units, or just the sheer speed of units, the British are fast.

The Romanian Army thus far seems heavily prejudiced against enemy tanks, making them a slightly more effective minor nation in later war games. However they sacrifice a lot of anti-infantry capability for this.

The Nationalist Chinese are unfortunately very difficult to make an effective army with. They have almost no anti-tank capability, low overall firepower, and are very fragile. There's little point of playing a game against late war armies, as a Tiger or similar heavy tank can simply wade through most of your units. Simply put a competitive Chinese army is nearly impossible to achieve.

May 16, 2006 - 05:34 Italian Army

The Italians have a handful of units to pick from, most having some fairly significant drawbacks. Their units are sufficient at killing enemy infantry, but only the Carro provides any significant AT support.
