i attacked z98 and the submarine hit. the remaining attackers have not rolled yet. but before I continue to roll, you are required to choose how you will take the hit from the submarine.

note that the submarine entered z98 through z99 meaning the fleet has the option to retreat to z99 and to z96.

the sub gets first hit even though i have a destroyer in the water. you mean i have a choice to retreat with out a battle? if so i will retreat to sz96. and take a tip on my carrier. if the sub still hits

no you cannot retreat only the attacker can retreat, to either z96 or z99.
what i am saying is that the order of combat is the subs fire then casualties are chosen, then the rest of the attackers fire, then the defender chooses casualties, then the defender fires and the attacker chooses casualties. then the attacker either retreats or starts a second round of combat.

sub does not get a first strike because you have a destroyer (meaning it cannot kill any boat without that boat having the chance to fire back).

actually, you are right, the subs go in the same
round as the rest of the attackers IF there is
a defending destroyer present. i will fire the rest
of the attackers and THEN ask for casualties. -
ok, i got 5 more hits :-o with the rest of the attackers. you have a total of 7 possible casualties (2 on the acc, 1 des, 2 cru, 1 ftr, 1 tac), what will you keep in round 1 - (must be either a damaged acc or any single one of the other units).
