Britannia is really one of the best games ever made. I have never had so much fun playing a game as I have playing with an experienced group of Britannia players.
Of course, I’m always stuck playing Green (I get conned into it every time). And the stupid Danes always have horrible luck…
If you like Britannia, try playing Maharaja. It plays the same way, except it takes place in India.

Nope, I don’t own any of these games.
The closest I came was that I played Risk once. But I hated it, so I never played it again.

Are there any good Axis & Allies type Cold War games out there? The closest thing I’ve found is a freeware game, also on the site I mentioned above called Balance of Power. It’s a Geopolitical game. The only problem with it is that I havent figured out how to close the windows you can open up. There’s not closing button for them.
I’ve played Shogun (I know it as Samuri Swords) a few times, very excellent game. I also enjoy Diplomacy a great deal, although I haven’t gotten to play it much. If it weren’t for school…
settlers of catan is a fun game, especially the seafareres expansion. i havent played fortress america, but it sounds decent
i always though that fortress america sounds quite american. I think noone else in the world would think that a three-pincher invasion of the US could happen…. and then of course all these american stereotypes come in as well, fighting for freedom and such…
@Britannia: Seems like you have a different print than the version i know… who are the greens? Which is their “best” race? Saxons, Romans, Normans or Danes?
Greens are Danes/Welsh primarily.
Welsh, if they can get a foothold in europe beyond wales, can really score some points. Problem is, the Irish raiders come in the same years that the Welsh can score points in England itself.

I think the Welsh can do pretty well, if the Roman decides not to force them into submission. Then they can grow in numbers and do this one year “get out, conquer whatever city it was, and score some points” thing. Plus: if the Romans don’t attack them, later usually noone is strong enough to get you out of the mountains (making them a constant stream of points)… unless you get offensive, anger someone, and then lose all these offensive troops, leaving yourself more open than needed…
bossk’s right about diplomacy. that’s a great game, the best part about it being that there are no dice. it’s all startegy, no luck. the game is almost always different, because you are not bound to mandatory alliances, as in A&A
Well, the problem I find with the Welsh is after the Romans are in decline, the Saxons can provide a royal beating if the Welsh decide to venture outside Wales, where they score more points.
True, so the welsh just stay back, collect a few points every turn… and make their one breakout…
from what i remember the welsh are the one people that tends to stay on-board (thus scoring) for the whole game, while others come and go. So, they can afford to score “little but continously”.
i have that britannia game, but i’ve never played it (it’s actually my bro’s and he used to play it alot) is it as good as A&A or diplomacy or settlers of catan?

i would say the luck is more evenly distributed (you can’t do make-or-berak battles that easily) than in A&A. I don’t like Catan that much, so i would say it is better than that anyway.
Plus: i always love to play game with a historic background, and this is done nicely, with “easy” rules that still often lead to a more or less accurate “replay”… although strange things can and do happen in that sense :). The rules are slightly more complex than for diplomacy, A&A or the like, but by no means come anywhere close to Avalon Hill’s average complexity
Well, I’m a big fan of Catan. Its one of those games that can be played a thousand times and never get old.
Britannia though, well its probably one of the most fun games to sit around a table with 4 friends and play. Its up there with Atlantic Storm and Illuminate.
Problem with the Welsh is they score like 2 or 3 points every round for the duration of the game, assuming the Irish or Saxons or Romans don’t attack.
But if they can make that break out around turn 5 or 6, then it can get interesting.
is that IMP WW1 game done yet? or has it been done? do any of you know where you could buy it if it is out? i saw this 1 pic of it and it looks pretty fun.
yanny, have you played any of the expansions for settlers? i have the seafarers one, and that adds a new twist of islands that you can build boats to get to.
I have played Fortress America and Conquest Of The Empire both…but not for years. I own them but just haven’t really been into them for a long time.
I have played Seafarers, once. I love the Gold Mines.
I also own Starship of Catan, though I haven’t played it yet.
i heard from somebody that starship wasn’t as good as the original or seafarers, but i really don’t know b/c i’ve never played it
