• I didn’t hear about the homeschooling thing, but I didn’t read/see much about any of the recent shootings.

I did hear that this particular shooter killed himself and not the security guard, but good on her for trying to stop him.  Probably made a difference.

I don’t think anyone aims to glorify these people.  At best, they try to psychoanalyze the shooter and explain why it may have happened.  That’s why the give details of everything.  I still think the victims receive a lot of attention, but everyone wants to know “why?”

Shootings aren’t anything new, and they always have and always will be a main story in the news.  I agree with Switch - I think everyone has a guilty love of the macabre, something to take them from the doldrums of their daily lives.

  • Its not that the aim is to glorify the shooters, but that by giving them such attention, they are famous, and probably glorified in their own minds. Keep in mind that to be a shooter of this sort anyway, you must have some slightly off-kilter views on this world. So they don’t think they will be honored as heroes, but thats not what they are after. They get what they want when the media airs their stories in detail and delves into their personal life. Perhaps they feel vindication from that knowledge, before they die. I agree with Jen here. Stop spreading details of the shooter and his life, and only perhaps focus on the tragedy and memorials to the fallen.

  • on the point of the press bius, i noticed in one of the articals i read from the AP that the story was prity good untell the end. when it talked about the security guard, it got into how she was an ex-cop who was fired. no need for exacts, but it bothers me that our hero who saved lifes (even if she didn’t pull the triger on the last shot that killed the guy, she did put a few in him to stop him) had to have dirt dug up on her on the vary same day as the shoting.
it wasn’t vital to the story in any way, all it did was make the hero look like she wasn’t as good of a “good guy” as we thought.

i agree with Jen also that it would be nice to see responcible reporting from the reporters. but unfortunutlly people want to see this stuff. i’m a father, i like to know when there is a school shooting, it makes me pay attention and i hope makes other parents as well so the same dosn’t happen at other schools, or atleast it is lessened.

    Amen to that.

  • I will generally agree that in the US folks get what they want; except they often are not being told the truth about what they are buying.  I can’t explain without taking this political so suffice it to say the politicians are lying whenever they sell us a new program.

Which part made you laugh, DF?  The comment, or the fact that Jenn and Switch actually AGREED on something?!

I have an odd sense of humor, I see funny things where most people don’t.

I have to say Switch and Jenn agreeing makes my heart warm.  The fact that internet porn is involved makes me laugh and laugh… :-D

What’s also agreeable is that porn makes things warm as well.

    Happy holidays!

  • :-P OK, this thread has degenerated, (not you Jen) beyond any resonable reply.
Suffice it to say though, The news media is a joke, and are at the hub of our degenerating society. They need to take some responsibility for their action reporting, and think of who they will be hurting in the long run. Kids want attention, some will go to extremes to get it! Stop giving them notority in these horrible situations and they will not go that far as often as they are doing now. I raised 3 kids, and ran a home day care, I know of what I speak. If a kid can only get attention by being bad, then they will.
Parents seem to be just too busy these days, both working, and/or running around with their own agendas! Not being real parents at all. It dosen’t take a village to raise a child, just loving caring parents.

  • To blame “The Media” for societal degeneration is a bogus argument.  Media reflects what is occurring in our world and culture.  It is not a causative entity.

If you want to look for the cause of the degeneration in our society (if indeed it actually is degenerating…  we seem to have improved dramatically from the crime ridden culture of the 1970’s where our cities were considered to be on the verge of total collapse due to crime) then you need to look to the breakdown of the family and the community first and foremost.
