    • RE: What games can I play with the 1939 map?

      @Chris_Henry I was wondering about the map being crowded. I have been printing air bases and shipyards because I like those better than the counters in global 1940. But those will make things more crowded for sure.

      I might order the big one just hate to loose all the table space.

      @Chris_Henry thanks for that info. I did see the 1936 map so that will be the one I get.

      I need to pick a size. I like the idea of the 48x96 but that is the same size of my table so that wont leave room for stuff on the table.

    • Need a little help the game is preditable

      Ok so let me start off with my boys and I have played a few dozen AA games for far but this was our first Global. So we have a good understanding how turns often work out.

      We setup everything up last night so we could start fresh today. Turn 1 was fun and there where a few surprises for sure. But as we finished up the UK turn 2 we could all see the end of the game and how it was going to play out.

      What I mean is with the US able to join the war in turn 3 and Soviets just building up infantry for the German invasion that we all know is coming it was pretty clear the Axis couldn’t pull out a win. Our thinking is with the knowledge that the USA and Soviet union will be drawn in to the war because it is the only way for the Axis to win they are just building up and waiting to be set loose to attack.

      Maybe we did something wrong but we all felt the game had 3 or 4 turns left but you could predict how turns would play out so we stopped playing. We all really want to enjoy the game but in this case we didn’t.

      Any suggestions on playing and are we the only ones that feel this way?

    • [1914] Alternative map options?

      So with the prices of the 1914 game being put of reach for some of us I was thinking about different maps.

      Could I use the 1940 global map? I know the zones would be different but that could be worked around.

      Thought about buying the 1939 or 1936 global map from HBG but not sure it would be that much better.

      I’m in Fort Wayne Indiana. I have a few friends that play casually but willing to meet other players.

    • RE: Global or Anniversary for better 6 player game?

      Thanks for the feed back guys. I think I will do the AA50 game for our first few games then move up if others are wanting to.

      We just need to decide if we are doing 41 or 42 start.

    • Global or Anniversary for better 6 player game?

      I have a group of guys that are wanting to play Axis & Allies but not sure which edition to break out. We have a mix of player experience two never played, two with less than 3 games and two with around 10 games. All the games have been a mix of A&A games.

      At first I was thinking I need to buy A&A 1940 Europe so we can play Global(already own pacific) but then I remembered Anniversary will play with 6 players. Global would give me a reason to buy another game but it will also add Anzac and France to the mix and while not major factors it would make things a little more complicated for those players. Where Anniversary would make things more simple for all the players with only the USA controlling china also, plus rules feel a little easier for new players.

      Really leaning toward playing Anniversary but buying 1940 Europe if we start playing more. What do you all think?

      I’m also thinking I will play as Italy because they feel like the slowest and I think it would be fun to see if I can take over Africa.

    • Little disappointed in D-Day

      So last night my son and I played a full game of D-day. Both of us are disappointed in the game over all and don’t have any plans to play it again. As we played a few things stood out to us,

      A- Planes are pretty useless (understand this is for balance)
      B- No way to hold the allies at the beach(which is historical and we understand)
      C- Germans can start reinforcing St Lo and they can’t lose.
      D- There are lots of areas that are pointless to move to as the allies

      I understand we may be wrong about the above list and we should try the game a few more times but we both thought it was hands down the worst AA game (or any board game) we have played so I don’t think it will be played anymore.

      How about you guys
      Do you like the game?
      Is it a game you play much?

    • My son found my ships

      When WaS came out I bought a lot of stuff and the local store played a lot of games, like most things over time it faded and the stuff got shelved. Then when I sold my miniature game stuff WaS was one of the few games I keep because I enjoyed it so much and hoped one day to teach my kids. Well last week my youngest son was going thru the basement looking for board games and he found my WaS box.

      We set out everything on our gaming table and  started playing a few games. I can’t find my map I made so will have to make a new one but no big deal. But playing I have noticed with 2 or 3 people drawing from one collection we don’t have enough ships. I have looked but the price of WaS are kinda nuts I think I’m going to buy some normal WW2 ships and just paint them myself. Guessing I could find all the ship cards online and if I keep with ships WaS has it would be easy to add more ships.

      This got me thinking does everyone stick with the WaS ships or have others branched out too?

    • RE: Any WW1 global players?

      That would be why I don’t see much info on it. Thanks

      My son and I saw a Youtube video on playing 1914 on the 1940 global map it looked pretty nice I think we will give that a try once I get my Global maps. We talked last night about some cool “what if” games like what if America or Italy didn’t join the allies or maybe joined the central powers. Lots of different ideas that we could play out on a world map and have a lot of fun.

      I will keep a watch for HBG maps.

    • Any WW1 global players?

      My son and I have been talking about the WW2 1936 map game and we both thought a WW1 version would be really nice. I historical board gaming has a game but looks like it isn’t getting as much play as the 1936 game.

      @Topmat:

      Hope your game goes great!  :-D

      Thanks we had a good time. We finished that game and played another on Sat.  Then I dug out my Axis & Allies Navel ships and Wings of War (WWI & WWII) we played all those too. So we played a lot of games over the weekend I really enjoyed the time glad I never got rid of those things.

      Thanks  again everyone.

      I will talk to my boys and see what they think.  We even found global war 1936 and the 1939 map/games. Those look very cool.

      We started a game of classic  (what I called original)  last night and should finish it today.

      @Gargantua:

      Go out and buy anniversary edition.  Hands down the best out of box version of the game ever released.  Comes with two setups, 1941 and 1942.

      Great story!  Enjoy!!

      Would the Anniversary Edition be a better place to start over the Global boxes?

    • RE: Father/son games this week

      @wittmann:

      You are sounding like one of us now! We are mostly sculpt collectors; 41 is too basic for us, but has its uses . It has Tigers amd IS2s.

      Being one of you guys isn’t a bad thing for sure. I played 15mm WWII and other historical mini games for years so this is kinda like old times.

      And for $20(amazon) I can get Tigers…. I’m okay with that will have to pick it up.

      @Nowhere:

      When you say you have the original game, are you speaking of the 1980s version?

      Edit:  Doing more reading I think I might pass on the 1914 game for now. So that means I will be getting 1940 boxes.

      Follow up question would it be worth getting the Anniversary Edition if I get the Global game?

      I don’t know how old the game is but my son saw the 1984 date on some of the cards. The rules say 2nd edition and the box has the foam trays to hold the minis. I bought it used around 1999 or 2000.

    • RE: Game pieces questions

      @CWO:

      @Warhawk77:

      Starting to play more and I was wondering do all the box sets have the game pieces in the same scale?

      The short answer is “mostly yes”. The longer answer is a bit more complicated. From game to game, A&A sculpts have generally been on the same scale when you compare units belonging to the same unit class; in other words, specific sculpt X will generally be the same size no matter which game it comes from. Within each class, however, scales can vary; for instance, the Yamato and Iowa battleship sculpts are roughly the same size, even though in reality Yamato was much bigger than Iowa. There’s even more variation between unit classes, the most extreme case being the scale of the infantry sculpts and the scale of the battleship / carrier sculpts.

      There have also been some cases of scale changes for specific units. The British and German battleship sculpts became larger and more detailed when many of the sculpts were “refreshed” at one point. The German 88mm sculpt went from being small (and mis-representing field artillery) to being large (and correctly representing an AAA gun), and the same thing happened to the Stuka (which originally mis-represented a fighter rather than a dive bomber). And note that the ANZAC infantry sculpt is somewhat notorious for being rather large compared with other infantry units.

      Reading the reply I see I should have asked the question better. I should not have used the term scale as the pieces are different scales compared to each others but you fully understood what I was trying to say so thank you.

      I will point out I had never thought about the different types of planes and guns that the sculpts are until you pointed it out so now I will have to go thru my games and compare them all.  :-D I know I’m helpless and get sidetracked very easy maybe a little ADD on my part, but what else would I do tomorrow?

      Thanks Again

    • RE: Father/son games this week

      I was thinking of buying just the one but the issue there is which one to pick.  My oldest and I both like the European theater better so we would get that one but my youngest wants to play as Japan. To encourage him to play more I might need to buy that one first.  Good news is I have a $100 bonus coming in a few weeks and I count that as “free money” so buying a game or two would be a good deal. Could get the 1914 and basic 1941 edition but not sure how much we would play 1941 if the rules are pretty basic after playing the others. But honestly for the price might just get it for extra minis and stuff.

    • Game pieces questions

      This might have been covered but I didn’t see it, and this might be in the wrong place but wasn’t sure where else to post it.

      Starting to play more and I was wondering do all the box sets have the game pieces in the same scale? It does look like some boxes have different sculpts for the pieces but are about the same size.

      The reason I’m asking is I have the Original game and we run out of pieces when playing it so thinking after we buy the two 1940 boxes maybe I could use those original pieces for extras. Guess the colors might be off but that isn’t a issue because I plan on painting them all anyway. I played 15mm WWII games for years so breaking out the paints might be lots of fun.
