    • Shapeways question for Coachofmany

      Hi Doug.  I was looking at your shapeways model, especially the Kaga.  How does the size of these compare with regular A&A pieces.  For example, how long is the shapeways Kaga compared to either the Akagi from A&A41 or the usual Shinano from the other A&A games?  Or are these scaled for the A&A miniatures and not really meant to use with the regular A&A pieces?

      Yes, almost all of it.  They are 1/8" stainless braided cables rated at 1800 pounds each.  You could essentially hang a  couple pickup trucks on the wall.

      They are not technically “attached” to the shelves.  They pass through the shelves and I engineered a little trick underneath so that the shelves can rest upon what’s going on under there.  Here’s a detail shot of one passing through some shelves:

      Their is a 3/4" cleat attached to the battens and the rear of the shelf rests upon (and is nailed into) it.  So, even though each shelf has 3/4" of support at the rear, it only appears to sink into the wall 1/4" (the inset of each batten). Â

      11.5" of useful shelf space.

      3/4" but they look thicker due to the facing.

      Overall the Panzer Grenadier is EXCELLENT!!  However, you are clearly modeling a late war uniform and laced boots would be more correct.  Even though some troops did have jackboots right up to the end, the vast majority of troops were issued lace ups by this time in the war.  That’s a minor thing though.

      I just keep my stuff as bought although I might add extra pieces that I have bought.  If I would mix them, I’d end up forgetting what went with what.  Also, when I buy a new one, I make a manifest of individual pieces so that I will always know just what it came with I bought it in case I add extra pieces later.  As for storage, game boxes were considered when I was working out house design:

      Big boxes such as Anniversary and '40 have thrown a small wrench into things though.

      @variance:

      I’d buy the Death Star and then tell the people of Earth to give me all their money and pretty women or I will blow them up, and then once I get all the goods I would blow them up.Â

      I love this response!!

      @coachofmany:

      @Pacific:

      Loving the detail on the upcoming Japanese stuff and I hope that the torpedo on the Kate can be made to work somehow.  The Japanese paratrooper is well detailed but it’s another guy just standing there doing nothing.  We need more infantry doing stuff.  For example, the Russian infantry guy charging is most excellent.  Infantry just standing at attention is boring to me.  When I think of Japanese infantry of any type, I think of the Banzai charge.  Otherwise, things look excellent!

      We are trying to keep a standard with the Airborne units. All HBG Airborne is standing upright, some with guns. We do plan on making other Infantry and it will be more of a charging or moving stance.

      That makes perfect sense.  Thanks for the reply!  :mrgreen:

    • RE: Indian Ocean Fleet Battle

      We played our Pacific War  scenario “Operation C”.  I decided to go with the original Japanese plan of sending an additional occupation fleet/force in order to conquer Ceylon.  It quickly became obvious why the planners shelved that plan.  Attrition, attrition, attrition.  Of course, this would force some commitment of forces by Britain given the fact that so much of the Desert War’s supply line was based on the cape of good hope shipping routes. It turns out that there wouldn’t be much (or very possibly ANYTHING of any use) left for Midway (which would of course have had to be postponed) except maybe some empty carriers and some surface assets.  We’ll keep working on it though and hammer out a workable scenario eventually….

      Interesting coincidence seeing this thread!  We’re play testing a scenario about this very raid (Operation C the Japanese called it) this weekend using my Pacific War gaming system.

    • RE: HBG's Japanese Sets

      Been looking forward to this for over twenty years.  Please make the infantry in an action pose.  You did this with the Soviet set and they are excellent.  When you think of Japanese infantry, the first thing that immediately enters your mind is a bayonet charge and men screaming BANZAI!!! while doing it.

    • RE: Red Dawn, worst movie premise of the decade?

      I’m a product of the '80s. As such, Red Dawn is a sacred icon of my youth. It didn’t matter how plausible the premise was. What mattered was how FUN that movie was to a twelve year old boy. It had every element a kid could want. Soviets invading……kids bivouacing in the mountains with AK47’s and forming a resistance group. No mushy love junk. Gunfights, things blowing up, tanks, helicopter firing missiles…ALL GREAT STUFF!!! Then Milton Bradley comes out with Fortress America just two years later…HOLY CRAP!!!   We played that thing to death!!   That movie became ingrained (in a good fun way) into my psyche and has been with me ever since. Hardly a week goes by that I don’t think of the words “Red Dawn” or some tidbit from the movie itself. I still hold my AK up at the range somtines and yell “WOLVERINES!!!” I can easily picture the opening credits and hear the theme in my head as I type this. Yeah, I LOVE Red Dawn. I wouldn’t trade the memories of that movie and the synaptic connections they fostered for a hundred million dollars.   I’m sure the new one does suck…it’s not the '80s anymore.

      WOLVERINES!!!    :-D

    • RE: Hex based A&A based maps.

      Yes.  It’s a geomorphic gameboard.  This allows you to experiment with both fictional and history based battles.  When I was a kid, I was fascinated by the Helen of Toy game advertisements in the back of old comic books……especially, Task Force.  I dreamed of what that game would be like and later, in junior high school, I began to develop what would eventually become this game.  It’s inspired by the art in those old ads, influenced by the classic Gamemaster Series and ultimately finalized by my own style with a focus on playability, strategy and the most crucial element of any game…FUN.
