    • We sure played A&A '86 alot!

I broke out my good ol’ A&A second edition from 1986 this evening for some memories and laughed at the condition of some of the bits.  My buddy got his A&A in 1984 but I didn’t get mine until 1986 (I was 14).  We played the hell out of that game over the years.  We fought WWII on that board hundreds and hundreds of times and it shows…especially the money and manual.  I took some pictures of them tonight just for chuckles.  You see the wear in the pictures if you look closely but it’s very apparent in person.  The one’s especially show use with cracks along the edges and all the bills feel brittle comared to a normal set.  The first two pictures show an unopened stack of bills at the top and a slightly used set on the left for comparison to the well used set on the right:

And here is a shot of a 1984 manual on the left that was hardly used compared to my 1986 set on the right.  Notice how much darker the 1986 one is from being thumbed through so many times over the years.

An extra set of combat units in all five colors cost 10 bucks and you had to write a letter to MB to get them!  The 1984 rules didn’t offer any additional pieces.  Ahhhh….memories.

That’s the best risk game ever made IMO.  SPQRisiko is right up there with it though.

I posted these before in a different thread but thay are relevant here too.  They take a little time and patience but they are dirt cheap (as in nothing to 10 cents) and they store nicely in the box because you make them to fit the box!  There’s a certain amount of pride in them when they get used too because you know that YOU created them from junk….just cardboard and glue.  IMO they are the perfect solution because they are tailor made for whatever pieces and whichever game you are going to store in them.

      @Gargantua:

The best part was when your buddy came over and said "whats this?"  then flipped it over to look at the other side… :S

HAHA!!  Yes, that hapened to me many a time.  For some reason, Shogun seemed to have it happen the most.

Actually, it’s the “How Things Work” series from the same publisher.  I have some of the WWII books from them that you are talking about but not the entire series unfortunately.  Aequitas, thank you for the kind words!  I just recently finished a corner couch for the room as well and the game table/desk is in the final stages of assembly.  Here are a couple of photos:

I wish that the M38 was real!  The M40 is actually a post war West German.  I used to have  a Heer and an SS M40, both with original paint and 98% decals.  They were stolen many years ago unfortunately.

    • RE: Was this the best game?

Anniversary may well be the best of the bunch but I’ll always love Classic the best.  I was 12 in 1984 and a whole new world opened up to me that year.  So many good memories….my life changed forever.

    • RE: Columbia Games War of 1812

I was refering to regular ol’ Victory.  I have Pacific Victory but I haven’t played it.  It’s combat system is based on regular Victory.  It does look like an interesting game.

    • RE: Columbia Games War of 1812

I haven’t found a clunker yet.  Unfortunately, some their games have become increasingly complicated over the years but it’s a very nice thing that they are still making the old ones for mentally stunted guys such as myself.  And some of their newest titles seem to have returned to an earlier, simpler mindset.  But Victory……now that is one of the very best games that I’ve played in my life.  It’s fun, suspensful, full of bluff and posturing.  It’s FUN!!!

Anniversary is in a different room because it’s too large to fit on the shelves in that room.  The games shown are not all of them.  If by card shuffler you mean the grey metal contraption in picture two, that’s an old Hallicrafter’s shortwave from the early 50’s.  I really love the original Avalon Hill games as well.  Not too simple but not crazy complicated either.

I’ve been playing Columbia Games for years.  They are some of the best games I’ve ever played.  Quebec, Napoleon, 1812, Victory…the list goes on and on.  Just plain FINE products!!

    • How/where does everybody store their games?

I’ve given away alot of games over the years but I still have a bunch….too many really.  Even though that’s the case,  I try to think of where they will go when I’m designing a space.  I know that some of you guys actually have rooms dedicated to games and some of you have to be creative with what space you have.  Whatever the case, show us what your solution is.  I’ll start.  Here are a few of my games.  Lots of good memories  :-)
