The way I understood the rules, the US was not at war if I declared war against France. I never would have put myself in this position.
Please advise. I spent time reviewing the OOB manual for 2nd edition before my Japanese turn, and read it as a DOW vs UK/Anzac or France was not a DOW against the US. I’ve played probably 40 games and didn’t know otherwise -
-
Pg 37 of the Europe 2nd edition rulebook says:
“A declaration of war by Japan against either the United Kingdom or Anzac will immediately result in a state of war between Japan and both of those powers. A state of war between Japan and France or between Japan and the Soviet Union will not affect relations between Japan and the United States, and vice versa”.
What am I missing? I don’t see anywhere in the book that it says the DOW brings in the US.
-
I apologize in advance if this is a very basic rule that I’m misunderstanding, or have misunderstood for a long time.
-
not a big problem stalingradski, we can work this out. luckily time travel into the past is pretty easy in this game.
@rulebook:
A declaration of war by Japan against either the United Kingdom or Anzac will immediately result in a state of war between Japan and both of those powers.the period here is important
A state of war between Japan and France or between Japan and the Soviet Union will not affect relations between Japan and the United States, and vice versa.
keep reading on page 37 and it spells out the usa situation.
@rulebook:The United States may not declare war on any Axis power unless an Axis power either declares war on it first or captures London or any territory in North America, or Japan makes an unprovoked declaration of war against the UK or ANZAC, after which it may declare war on any or all Axis powers on its following turn.
you did not just declare war on france you declared war on uk/anzac. you also attacked several uk/anzac territories.
i am surprised that you did not know that attacking uk/anzac does not bring usa into war.
1)in this game why did you not attack the uk earlier?
2)what incentive does japan have to not attack uk/anzac turn 1 every game?
3)how do you want to undo this situation?right now i think the best solution would probably be to redo j3.
i’m looking forward to hearing your 3 responses.
-
Ok, all it took was reading further. It’s my own d$%#&d fault :-)
Answer to your questions:
1. I’m a G4/J3 or J4 Axis player. It wins me many, many games. It’s pretty much against the grain from what everyone else does, and usually catches people off guard and they don’t know how to react to a patient Axis.
2. The incentive is keeping the US out of the war (which was why my German fleet is exposed in 91, Japanese fleet off Borneo exposed) until US 4. It keeps the US from landing off Africa, and it completely isolates Russia. I’m a G11/G12 (or later) Moscow killer, not a G6 or G7 like most.
3. I completely messed up. I have no argument. I have no excuse for not knowing the rule. So I’m at a loss. I think based on my positioning, and what you know about my Axis game now, you can see why I was positioned as I was. Frankly it’s an embarrassment.
I think Germany has to be what it is. I moved to 91; so be it. Dice have been rolled on Japan’s turn. However, no dice have been rolled for the US turn. I’d ask that I have the ability to do Japan’s NCM over. I think since dice were rolled, they should to be kept as is. I don’t remember who got the better of the turn. I’ll end up losing a German fleet I never meant to lose, and probably a Japanese transport off Borneo.
If you look at my positioning, if I knew I’d be at war with the US, I generally would place Japanese destroyer blockers in SZs 55 and 46. It’s a signature move of mine if you look back at any of my Axis league wins. I aggressively buy destroyers and block, block, block. If I had realized the US was in the war, I would have used them this way.
I also feel that beyond redoing my NCM you should have some consideration sent your way, because you’re letting me off the hook, basically. How about if you get a non-capital reroll at some point when you’re on offense, no questions asked.
I feel like at this point I’ve already shot myself in the foot in this game, and will have an uphill battle. I’m a pretty conservatively aggressive Axis player, and don’t generally expose important fleets to attack.
All of that having been said - I’m actually interested in how interested you are in my slooow Axis strategy. I’m 6 - 0 so far in league play using it, and expect to win every game I play with the Axis using this strategy, dice being equal. I’m not saying it from hubris, just from experience. When I don’t eff up ( :-D), it’s a tough method to beat for the Allies.
-
you can redo the j turn.
if you want to redo from beginning and not attack uk to save g fleet that is fine.
if you want to keep j rolls and redo ncm that is cool too
-
You are a gracious competitor. My sense of honor tells me the dice should be kept, and the German fleet potentially lost. It’s ok - I deserve it. I usually learn my most important lessons the hard way :-)
Are you good taking a reroll at some point? It would allow me to feel there is some balance. I’ve been on the other side of letting someone off the hook, and having them come roaring back. I feel we need something to make up for the fact that you’re being an excellent sportsman.
I’ll take the J3 map, download and edit the NCM as much as possible. I think it’ll mostly be consolidating the entire fleet off Celebes and giving up the transport off Borneo. I don’t think anything else has to change.
I’m regretful this happened at all.

it’s not a big deal.
i dont need a reroll. the dice are random. sometimes they can kill you and there is nothing you can do about it.
well you can always complain.

:-)
Ok, fair enough. At least grant me that I’ll do the same thing you did for me if ever needed.
Here’s the revised NCM.
