Well, you can’t make this stuff up. Check out the battles of Bryansk and Smolensk… not every day a 50% chance to lose one fighter turns into triple snake eyes. It doesn’t get much more painful.
As far as Russia’s dmamge to Moscow’s IC, I edited out 2 IPCs off the top of Russia’s economy, then paid the other 5 the normal way.

They’re there more for to give you pause and to soak a couple hits rather than actually be expected to do their primary job. That’s pretty crazy, though.

Anytime any Italians can kill any Soviets, leadership back in Berlin feels better about propping up the government in Rome… I was actually hoping you’d attack those guys and they could kill 4-5 infantry that they otherwise wouldn’t have any opportunity to kill. The planes, well, that’s just dumb luck.

You figure there’s a 41% chance of hitting exactly once. About 8.5% chance of hitting exactly twice, and about 0.5% chance of hitting all three times. A 5 IPC piece takes out 6 IPC worth of planes if it gets to fire all 3 times.
If it was always that ratio, it’d be easier to predict – it’s so squirrely how you can go a whole game without a hit on an AA and you can lose 2 strats to an IC, or 3 fighters to a single AA gun. I think it’s the absolute best argument for low luck. Low luck on AA just adds all the pips and gives you a remainder roll. 12 planes vs 4 AA guns = you lose 2, call it day, and that’s that.

Yes to your strategy with the Italians - they exposed a lot of Russians to the Smolensk kill zone. But I attacked them because it takes away the ability for Italy to can-open on the front. I’m a big believer that as Russia, every Italian piece killed on the front is worth more than they seem - without Italy, Germany becomes more monolithic and predictable - particularly Germany’s mechanized forces. Without Italy, Russia can constantly put out one infantry army as a screen.
Anyhow, I’m pretty happy those two Italian AA guns are being hauled back to Moscow right now to be resmelted into artillery tubes. The Reds will need all the help they can get… :-D

Can I trouble you for an OOL, please? I don’t know whose navy you’d rather take the damages – I allocated the first sub hit to the carrier since the planes have a place to land and the second to the russian sub. Since destroyers are present, everybody gets to return fire so that wasn’t an essential choice. If you don’t want that carrier to soak a hit, please let me know and we’ll adjust for the remainder of the battle. I should have asked first, in retrospect, given that if the battle goes really well for you you’d prefer to defend the seazone with a loaded carrier and that if the battle goes really poorly for you, you’d prefer to have more dice on defense in this battle.
At 7 casualties, I’m 10 pips ahead of average – so everything is probably fine with the way I did it. I figure if you sank 2 subs to start, and then 5 more hits come up where only 3 are expected, you probably soak at that point anyway and take 4 destroyer casualties so you get an extra destroyer roll next round. As it is, I expect a sub casualty and 4 destroyer casualties, so we’re probably even-steven.
To recap, I need an OOL. And if you don’t want the carrier to take a hit this round, let me know :-) Thanks!

Your instincts are right on - I’ll tip the Carrier and lose subs + UK destroyers. Next round I’ll lose destroyers, and Carrier last (then fighters, of course, if it comes to that), unless by some stretch you still have subs, at which point I’ll have to go over OOL with you again.
Too bad for me - italians were less than a 50-50 battle. I knew you could clean me out with aircraft, but I wanted to make it as painful as possible… we’ll see how the dice go! :-)

I had the same thought: I could see who was coming that turn so I built what I could to make it hurt if they came anyway! If the dice go low for both of us, you still win. As it is, I think we’re in coinflip territory. Anything between 35-65 and I figure it could easily go either way, especially knowing that just 1 extra hit or miss from expected in the first round or two of combat can make a huge difference. I get caught scrambling into unwinnable battles all the time just thinking “ooh, I can trade these 3 fighters for 4 of his” and then I end up with a whole train full of boxcars and 3 fighters rusting in saltwater… :lol:
