    Antholin - I’m sorry for the absurd luck on the islands. You set yourself up to rightly take a couple different islands over the last couple turns, and those things make a huge difference. I’m still getting used to playing with straight dice… Steve and I have played with some version of low luck over the past decade precisely because of the Phillipines debacle… your strategy was sound, but the dice betrayed you.

    Just letting you know I recognize it for what it is.

    Why thank you. I was going for a rhytm there, but the dice gods said “bugger off.” Do you think that you could incorporate the low luck system with this program? Or would one have to go back to the previous program?


  • There is a low luck option here, but it’s pure low luck… so it simply adds up all the pips and gives you the number of hits + one dice roll with the remainder…

    Example - 6 infantry/4 artillery/fighter/tac bomber = 25 total pips, which = 4 automatic hits and one roll of 1. For me, that’s a little bit too low luck… almost completely takes dice out of the game.

    Using the old platform, we could use mine and Steve’s version, which gave you a safety net of at least one hit when you have a certain number of total pips (we went with eight), and then you roll the rest. In the example above, the first six pips were an auto hit, and you roll the rest… so you’d get one automatic hit + 6@2 + 1@3 + 1@4. It might not sound like much, but being able to depend on a hit every round can mean everything in a battle.

    The problem is, the ABattlemap takes so long to do a move… it’s like watching a glacier.

    I’m trying really, really hard to deal with the dice the best I can, but it ain’t easy after years of playing a strategy game with dice instead of a dice game with strategy. The thing I dislike the most is when people feel good about their turn when their success was based on randomness. I’m not into big swings of luck, even when it is in my favor. It makes me feel like I don’t deserve it. It’s most fun to win or lose on strategy, not dice, in my opinion.

    What would you prefer? Sticking with TripleA, or back to the ABattlemap? I would love to try my hand at the low luck system, but as you said ABattlemap is quite slow and the TripleA program is very convenient to deal with. We could start up another game with the old system, to at least get to know the low luck system that you both have developed. Let me know.

    There is a low luck option here, but it’s pure low luck… so it simply adds up all the pips and gives you the number of hits + one dice roll with the remainder…

    Example - 6 infantry/4 artillery/fighter/tac bomber = 25 total pips, which = 4 automatic hits and one roll of 1. For me, that’s a little bit too low luck… almost completely takes dice out of the game.

    Using the old platform, we could use mine and Steve’s version, which gave you a safety net of at least one hit when you have a certain number of total pips (we went with eight), and then you roll the rest. In the example above, the first six pips were an auto hit, and you roll the rest… so you’d get one automatic hit + 6@2 + 1@3 + 1@4. It might not sound like much, but being able to depend on a hit every round can mean everything in a battle.

    The problem is, the ABattlemap takes so long to do a move… it’s like watching a glacier.

    I’m trying really, really hard to deal with the dice the best I can, but it ain’t easy after years of playing a strategy game with dice instead of a dice game with strategy. The thing I dislike the most is when people feel good about their turn when their success was based on randomness. I’m not into big swings of luck, even when it is in my favor. It makes me feel like I don’t deserve it. It’s most fun to win or lose on strategy, not dice, in my opinion.Â


  • Well, I prefer a modified low luck, but a faster paced game… so, we’re stuck with this system. In theory, all of us should be able to enjoy both the good and the bad of dice. It just hurts to have a terrifically played game ruined by a stupid set of dice when it matters most.

    But. In order to play here, against other people, or in tournaments, we have to learn to deal with the silliness of totally random events. Ultimately, I vote for this latest platform, and straight dice.

    It was hard to say that.
