• If you are the us, should u build grannies and ground units and funnel into Russia with uk/us obsessively?

  • If Germany lets you… it’s hard to shuck over the top in this game against determined German naval and air builds.

And, it also depends on how much you want/need to dedicate to the Pacific theater.

In theory, being able to set up a continuous US shuck of infantry into Russia would be perfect… but almost impossible to pull off in real world play, against most opponents of any experience.

  • Yeah, German subs/other navy could hit you in the Atlantic, and their bombers from France, and planes in Norway…

You NEED lots of escorts, and the willingness to possibly lose many of these escorts to make this work. Also you need a Russia that still has Moscow when your first waves land–if it’s gone Germany just sends that stack north to the landing area.

  • It might be cheaper and faster to send fighters to help defend Moscow.  It still takes 4 turns to get there though.

  • It’s nearly impossible in this game to support Russia with UK/US units going directly to Russia. Spend your resources landing in Western Europe - that’s the best way to support the Russians.

  • How I go about this: US fighters to UK. If you are lucky and get longrange aircraft, this is much easier. So roll for tech a time or two.

UK is able to recover economically and begin preparing their army. Meanwhile, US is taking Med/Africa. UK sends in their force to the weakest point, while the US either does or bluffs an attack on Greece/S. France/Italy. After that it’s just finding the weak spot, landing with light losses, and hoping you hold.

  • techroll - I like it - and those fighters will come in handy, somewhere, eventually - beyond just playing defense.

Other than defending UK against Sealion, what is the purpose?  US fighters need carriers for mobility.  I feel the US should rarely build more fighters than it has carrier capacity.

  • Not Sealion they’d not b able 2 b there in time.

    1. Defending against the Luftwaffe.
    2. D-day/invasions

  • Absent Sealion, the only way the Luftwaffe threatens UK is strategic bombing if Germany builds the bombers.  UK fighters have generally been sufficient to stop that in any game I’ve played.

Luftwaffe certainly threatens the US fleet seeking to make D-day possible.  The US fleet will build quicker when IPs are spent on carriers & fighters than when IPs are spent on extra fighters in UK.

Now certainly board position means everything in A&A, and situations arise where US fighters in UK makes sense.  But as a general strategy, I’m having a hard time seeing it.

  • I’m having a hard time seeing where, with Alpha 3, the RAF can hold off the Germans.
    1. There’ll be equal numbers so equal casualties
    2. There should be max 2 casualties per turn
    3. Germany SHOULD be building 1+ planes/turn
    4. Why build carriers? I think the best fleet for D-Day is a few destroyers, but mainly cruisers and a battleship or two for bombards.

  • Carriers give great defensive punch.
Sure, they might not get as much, cost-wise, as purely destroyers.
But destroyers are fairly useless on offense.  Planes on carriers can defend transports in addition to helping with invasions.  Destroyers don’t give you that flexibility.

Other than those first couple turns of threatening Sealion, how does strategic bombing UK do anything?
As UK, for much of the game I’ll only be building out of Canada/South Africa/a middle east IC.  I say let Germany bomb and lose planes to AA guns.

  • So UK never participates in a landing on France/Norway/Germany?!?! How do the Allies win?

  • @techroll42:

This is a significant part of our disconnect.  I had never heard of Alpha 3 until a couple days ago and play with the original rules.

  • Eventually, once the Allies start landing in Western Europe, UK will have to start building in the London IC.
But that’s gonna be a long while before that happens, and once it starts Germany’s going to have much more pressing concerns than bombing London.

So yes, bombing London will cost UK, but probably only once, and it will be a while before that cost even comes up.

  • I disagree. I feel that the uk is needed in any landing.

  • Alsch91 is right.  UK only needs to build infantry in London if Germany puts up a credible sea lion threat.  Once the threat is over they can build elsewhere and just let the London IC sit damaged.

Many turns later, those UK infantry that were built on round 1 may reinforce an American landing in Normandy/Holland.  They can be picked up by transports that were built in Canada, perhaps with some Canadian built artillery units already on board, and dropped wherever the Americans just landed.  There is little need to build much in UK if Germany wants to keep strategic bombing
